    Grain Displacement Question

The grain absorption number is from Brewer’s Friend, default setting of .5 qt/lb. So, 16 lbs of grain would be 8 qts or 2 gal. Does that seem way off?

    Grain Displacement Question

I’m getting ready to buy a bag for getting into BIAB. I mostly plan on 2.5 gal batches but would to do big 5 gal batches if so inclined. I have a 10 gal kettle I plan to use, but after looking at my last 5 gal batch (1.081 OG and 15.9 lbs grain) my total water needed was 9.67 gal, which...

1 dry yeast packet not enough for 3 gallon batch? - Brewer's Friend

Yeah, I was so surprised by the numbers it was giving me. I couldn’t imagine how a packet isn’t enough for 3 when it’ll do 5 gallons in most cases. If doing a liquid yeast with a starter, how does one determine how big a starter to make? I often see a 2L starter for 5 gal batches, but what...

1 dry yeast packet not enough for 3 gallon batch? - Brewer's Friend

I brew all grain. My water is pretty neutral (7.2) and typically don’t need to make any pH adjustments to get it in the normal mash range. Some really dark beers I may thin the mash a little if the pH is projected to be below 5.3. My normal ale fermentation process is to primary for 5-7 days at...

Just got my Coconut and Chocolate extracts today! I’ll report back when I know more. [emoji482]

1 dry yeast packet not enough for 3 gallon batch? - Brewer's Friend

The selection I was using was “Pro” which uses .75 billion/ml/P as the pitching rate. I started looking closer at my pitching rate because I feel like my biggest and most common fluctuations in beer quality can be attributed to fermentation. My temp control is spot on using BrewPi so that’s...

1 dry yeast packet not enough for 3 gallon batch? - Brewer's Friend

@brewshki and @Smellyglove... I guess what I'm trying to rectify is what is ideal vs what will "just get the job done." Sure, one packet will complete the job, but it would appear to be far from ideal? I have made several batches that have had a mild "soapy" element to it. This, as I understand...

1 dry yeast packet not enough for 3 gallon batch? - Brewer's Friend

I'm trying to gain a greater understanding of those little workhorse bugs we use. I have always just pitched a rehydrated dry yeast pack for any 5 gal batch under 1.060. Two packs for anything over 60. But for education's sake I started looking at Brewer's Friend yeast calculator. I see for my 3...

    Death by Coconut Clone

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It is the Death by Coconut recipe. I tried all sorts of changes like adding lactose and other crystal malts, raising the mash temp, etc. I tried the other recipe from the Reddit conversation with the head brewer. Same numbers. Turns out just changing the...

    Death by Coconut Clone

Diverting back a tad, I am getting ready to brew the recipe from the December BYO. I have entered the recipe exactly as is into Brewer's Friend and I'm struggling to get the OG and FG to come out. The magazine recipe states 1.067 OG and 1.017 FG. Brewer's Friend comes up with 1.078 OG and 1.014...

    Did I scorch my kettle?

Update...Fermentation finished and yeast dropped clear. Took a gravity reading of 10 brix...combined with 20.2 brix OG and somehow my FG is 1.017. Seeing that planned FG was 1.021, I’m pretty surprised it actually overshot. So much for caramelization! [emoji482]Then again, I missed my mash temp...

    Did I scorch my kettle?

Well that sucks. Hopefully it was selective and picked the crystal malts to further caramelize. [emoji23]

    Did I scorch my kettle?

I wish I knew, but the boil was the craziest boil I’ve ever seen. Usually on that BG14 burner, you can’t turn it up too high without the flames starting to jump. But I apparently reached a new level with it! Is it possible I caramelized some of the wort from this? If so, I guess I’m going to...

    Did I scorch my kettle?

This discoloration appeared after my last brew. This is a Megapot 1.2 so it’s not a total cheapo pot. My boil on this last brew got going a bit more intense than usual. I caught it after about 10 minutes but did I do damage to the pot or my beer?

Using a beer fridge to cool a keezer

I did this using an old freezer kept at 38F for keg serving and a Son of a Chiller type ferm chamber. I used an old analog Ranco for controlling the freezer and my Brewpi would switch on a 12V case fan, as necessary, attached to a 2” insulated pvc pipe that ran between the two. A second 2” pipe...

    My keezer build

Looks like you have some solid skills! How exactly did you score the foam board before you broke it? I don’t have a table saw, and my last go at 2” board left me with some pretty sloppy edges.

    First black IPA/CDA recipe check

Well I was thinking initially the Zeus bittering charge would fill that void, but since it is traditionally only for bittering, that really misses the spot. I DO want that dank, resiny element so perhaps I'll do this? .5 oz Zeus 60 min .5 oz Simcoe 20 min .5 oz Amarillo 20...

    First black IPA/CDA recipe check

    After looking at many recipes, I've put together this... OG 1.074 FG 1.013 SRM 39.75 IBU 77 12 lb (80%) Pale 2-row 1 lb (6.7%) C-60 1 lb. (6.7%) Midnight wheat 0.5 lb. (3.3%) Special roast 0.5 lb (3.3%) Flaked rye 0.5 oz Zeus...
