What to get a beer lover for Christmas?

If they are pretty new to brewing "radical brewing" by Randy Mosher is a really fun book. Or a giant sack of grain would be great. I'd love to see a big sack of German pils malt with a red bow around it sitting under the tree!

    Question about lees in secondary

I’ve only done a couple ciders. They’ve been with beer yeast and i’ve done more carbonated that still, so take this for what it’s worth. I started cold crashing my ciders before bottling, just like beers, to help clear them a bit. It seems to help them clear. That said the still end up with a...

    Delicious braggot wort!!!

One year latter and thus braggot is still sitting in a carboy waiting to get bottled. I pulled a sample last week and it’s pretty good. It’s definitely thin but I’m gonna carb it up a little when I bottle my next batch of beer. I’ve been working out if state most of the year so I’m just...

    Kolsch Yeasts

I regularly use WL 029 right around 60. Works great. I have used K 97 for a kolsch it took forever to clear and the yeast didn't quite taste like a kolsch. It was an ok beer maybe better suited for an alt like mentioned above. It's a fun simple beer to make. And awesome to have on hand for the...

    bottle priming help

When I've done this it's been 1/2 teaspoon per 12 oz bottle. It been a while and I don't know what sort of co2 measurement that would work out to be. I recal it being a little less fizzy than when I measure out a full batch. But I also never had bottles explode.

    Carboy overflow and airlocks

I use a 3/4 hose and a half gallon milk jug. that works well for me, but I rarely use whole hops. If you're at all concern about hops getting stuck, Shoot for the biggest hose your carboy and over flow jug can take. You'll be happier without a tone of headspace once I figure out the blowoff...

Has anyone used one of these for capping bottles.....

I have an old bench capper from a flea market. I can't speak for that particular brand but you'll love that style capper. Way nicer to use than a wing capper.

    Delicious braggot wort!!!

Did u taste any of it at bottling? Mine is still sitting in the primary. It still has a float of yeast on the top. Kinda crazy. I ment to pull a sample this weekend but we have kiddos and Christmas shopping took priority. I'm hoping it's done or close. If not I might toss a bit of notty...

    Delicious braggot wort!!!

I pulled a sample on 11/26 and the gravity was around 1.030. Starting was 1.062. It's still actively fermenting today 12/3. I would have thought the yeast would just zip through all those simple sugars? Is it pretty normal for braggots/meads to ferment so slow? I'm not trying to rush...

    Time in fermenter vs bottle

I made a wheatwine last spring that I bulk aged for about six weeks then dry hopped. It tasted great after an other two months in the bottle but the dry hop faded quickly. This year I plan to bulk age it three or four months then dry hop and bottle, aiming for that sweet spot with the hops and...

Need names for Cider. Funnier the better!

Apple fart is what I named my first cider attempt. 'Cause that's what it tasted like young.

Styles of Beer You Just Can't Stand

Anyone remember ten - fifteen years ago when all the Christmas beers were brown, sweet and over spiced? All of those. Gross. I've avoided all holiday beers up until last year. I don't know when brewer wised up that beer is not supposed to taste like an elf pooped out a pumpkin pie and wiped...

    Yeast stuck to carboy walls

Make sure u don't splash at all. U don't want to introduce any o2 to oxidize your beer. It will fall out on it's own.

    Orange Peel

I've used both cara cara oranges and navel oranges from the grocery store. Both with pretty good success. The cara cara was definitely more sweet orange on the nose. To grate them I use a microplane grater. Same one I use for cooking. You have tho be careful not to get into the white pith. For...

Can anyone tell me if this is oxidation?

I'm gonna take this an other way. I've had of my beers oxidize. Both times it had to do with how I transferred to my bottling bucket. Both beers stayed bitter but they lost all the floral/nice hop flavors. What was your process for packing? And you say the beer taste like all hops and no...

    Yeast stuck to carboy walls

Looks like yeast to me. You can leave it sit a little longer and more of it will drop out or if you can fit it in a fridge that will drop it out real quick. Looks like u dry hopped too. A cold crash will drop out all that hops too. Either way it won't hurt anything.

    Less trub

I hear you. I had the same problems with extract brews. You can actually calculate your original gravity with extract pretty easily. Just tally up all your extract and water, you'all have 100% efficiency if you dumped everything in you primary. And if u have one of those degassers that...

    Less trub

Have you taken any measurements with a hydrometer? That's how you tell for sure. It's a good idea the check that before bottling. You could have more yeast in the bottle for a couple reasons. Maybe there was more yeast still in suspension or maybe you stired up the yeast more when...

    Saison noob

Taking a couple consecutive gravity reading will tell you for sure. But like erikbw said just give it about two week and chances are it will be all done. Even if u don't see air lock activity, you still want to give the yeast time to drop out of suspension and clean up. That usually takes a...
