Mild Mannered Ale - help with yeast cake

I just listened to the Jamil Show episode about brewing a mild, which I'll be doing tomorrow night. He says to use 1 Wyeast packet or White Labs tube. He specifically states to not pitch it on th yeast cake.

    Long Island, NY supplies

I go to Brooklyn Homebrew. They're great people, always ready to answer questions and pleasant about it. In fact I just got back from there.

    Fermentation time for a Mild

I was going to pitch 1 Activator pack of Wyeast 1968. That is is what Jamil recommends in Brewing Classic Styles, I'm using his recipe. I'll leave it for 3 weeks in the bottle, minimum. But I figured that a lower gravity ale can be bottled quicker.

    Fermentation time for a Mild

I'm going to brew an English Mild with OG of 1.036. Do I need/want to leave it in the fermenter for 3 weeks or is 2 weeks enough since it is a lower gravity ale?

    winter olympics

At the end end of the ceremony they had these 3 giant torches in a big sculpture. They looked like giant joints. I bet the snowboarders got excited seeing that!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

A simple English Mild on Sunday night. I am using the recipe from Jamil and John Plamer's book. I guess my beer is my valentine. :mug:

I did almost nothing at work today

I just had to say it. In the morning we did some stuff and then I was the only one left and other than eat lunch I did nothing. I almost napped but I hate napping in a chair. I may do one small thing and then go home, get a cup of coffee, plan what I am buying at the LHBS tomorrow and then play...

Pale Ale Yeast Experiment on Brewing Radio

The goal was to just see what different yeasts would do with the same wort. A listener sent in the beer and the BBR staff tasted them and tried to figure out ( guess ) which beer was brewed with which yeast.

Why not Bleach for Bottle Cleaning

As far as sanitizing goes I use Star San. But I have never cleaned bottles with Ocyclean or PBW. But the reply that PBW and oxyclean are just better is enough of a reason for me to use it. I also heard the Chuck Tally interview and while it was interesting about using bleach and vinegar in...

Why not Bleach for Bottle Cleaning

I know many people here use Oxyclean for cleaning bottles and label removal. But what is wrong with using bleach for cleaning, not sanitizing? You have to rinse anyway and from people say here oxyclean can leave a residue. What am I missing here, other than hair?

    car stereo trouble

The reason why I would think that it would not be a cold solder joint is that after the receiver has warmed up it is still being bounced around and I would think you would still have some intermittency. The OP is saying it is fine once it warms up, not intermittent. Also when it starts he is...

    car stereo trouble

It sounds like your receiver is not putting out sound until it warms up. This happens on my home receiver. This isn't a problem for me because I leave the receiver on, but you cannot do that. What I would do is try to find out what level the receiver outs out and get a boom box or mp3 player...

Best way to control fermentation temperature inside the home?

I am still using fermenting buckets. If do the t-shirt method do I need to worry about small amount of water dripping in by the airlock grommet hole?

    Beer Wars: The Movie

I'm glad they are not ruining Honker's Ale. I have fond memories of working in Chicago for a couple of months and drinking Honker's.

Cracked first one open today... exceeded my expectations!!

Congrats! Last night when I was coming home I saw 2 neighbors of mine who had tried my first brew and were impressed, felt good. The whole time, standing outside my apartment door and talking, I could smell my current batch fermenting. I smell hops in my future!

Yeast Starter and delayed brewing date

I think you can just take it out, let it get to room temperature, and pitch it tomorrow. If the wort is clear on top of the yeast slurry then you can pour off some of that, but it's probably still cloudy. I did the worst recently. I activated a Wyeast pack over a month ago, realized that I was...
