    Klarstein Maischfest

Yeah, the Klarstein has a pretty annoying sparge set up. You have to pull the malt pipe, then place the drip ring on top of the kettle, then lower the pipe on top of the drip ring. You almost need 3 hands (especially of your basket full of grain is too heavy to hold up w/ one hand) or a hoist...

    Klarstein Maischfest

it's the same 110-120v as the smaller volume ones.... 2 levels of power 1000W & 1600W. Not super fast to heat up 7-8 gallons, but it gets there. I leave it partially covered until I get to a boil. Careful, though, it will boil over w/ the lid on. I use it plugged into a standard US 20amp...

First All Grain Brew is in the fermenter(long)

Next time save your ice until toward the end of chilling... More bang for your buck that way... The temperature difference between tap water and boiling wort is plenty for initial chilling. You don't need to waste your ice at this stage. As you start to get closer to 90-100F from tap water...

    Klarstein Maischfest

I bought the 35L from an Amazon Warehouse deal for $140 last year... It was most likely a return, but it looked pretty much brand new. It had an E4 error when I did the initial wet test w/ water. So I assume that's what got it sent back. I pushed reset button underneath and haven't had E4...

How does Low oxygen brewing work with Aerating the wort?

Ha.... here on the other side of the pond it's the opposite... A Master's Thesis, and a PhD Dissertation... Pain in the ass either way 😁 I was fortunate in that my program only required me to pass a qualifying exam to earn the MS if I was proceeding to a PhD... no Master's thesis. But if I...

    Improving kits

I think this might be the key... From the kit instructions, it sounds like maybe @Tooter is using pre-hopped extract kits... You definitely don't want to boil those for an hour... But you might want to try switching to un- hopped kits where you add your own hops at specified times. And boil...

    Mead Brewing Advice Needed

Have you seen the recipe for BOMM? (Bray's One Month Mead) He uses a Belgian ale yeast I believe... He tested many different Ale and Wine yeasts with a goal of finding one that makes a good quick Mead . The Belgian is the one he found best for this purpose. Also requires specific staggered...

    BIAB in All-In-One Machine

I used to do stove stop BIAB but now have a 34L Klarstein Maishfest. I generally use somewhere in the 2.5-3.5 qt/lb range with a small sparge (1-2 gallon). Thinner mash has better extraction for the same grist... But a sparge does increase the overall lauter efficiency... There's a plot...

Cheap laptop just to run beersmith

Plus one on the Dell refurbs... My last 3 laptops have been Dell latitude refurbs... I typically wipe them and install Ubuntu Linux. I watch for the Dell refurb sale and score a 1 or 2 year old model in the $350ish range. B grade is still quite good. They last me several years... 5+

    Rubber taste

I swap out frozen water bottles on the swamp cooler for the first couple of days. The stick-on LCD fermometer indicates that I maintain under 65F. Then I let it free rise to whatever ambient is at the time. (58-64ish in winter, 65-70ish in the summer). And in my case, I don't think it's...

    Rubber taste

I have had the burnt rubber off-flavor. It is very distinctly burnt rubber. It doesn't age out. I haven't figured out the cause or the solution. Though I, too, have suspected temperature. I ferment in a bucket , in a swamp cooler w/ ice packs, in a 60-70F basement. I didn't always get it...

Hire a home brewer for Kombucha- SF Bay area

Yep, super easy... I also started w/ some GT's to get my SCOBY and starter tea. Took right off. We didn't stick with it since SWMBO was the 'buch drinker and she didn't want to put in the work. But we made a base plain tea first ferment, then added juices/flavor syrups at bottling to get...
