    Game of thrones ale

Fermentation is done when it's done. And to know it's done when the krausen (The foam formed during fermentation) has disappear, take a gravity reading. Take another 3 days later and if it didn't change, the fermentation is ready. I have no experience with the yeast you have chosen, but it...

Balancing malt sweetness and hop bitterness

The FG could be calculated as an offset. Let's say that a ratio of 0.5 IBU/OG at 1.010 FG is what feel balanced between malt and hop. Any points over 1.010 would reduce the ratio by .10 (FG of 1.011 would mean a ratio of .490). And logically any points below 1.010 would increase the ratio by...

Balancing malt sweetness and hop bitterness

I get what you mean. Yeah FG also matter so that's why you were talking about styles. I didn't understand that. If all beer finished at the same FG a value of 0.5 would be "balanced". (Depending of the FG of course).

Pilsner DME - Time to boil?

Interesting :) it sterilize in seconds when 162F and over? I Thought it was for longer than that. I hate DME as it dry very quickly and forms chunky dough when exposed to air for few minutes. And I get problem to dissolve it correctly so this is why I also add it at 15. I could probably move...

Pilsner DME - Time to boil?

Yeah I already do 1/3 at 60 rest at 15 (Making sure everything is sanitized). So no problem either to add the Pilsner DME at 15 I guess? Thank!

Balancing malt sweetness and hop bitterness

I think what he meant was that .5 should feel balanced between malt and hop on your tongue. An IPA at .5 would feel neither toward malt or hop, just like with a blonde ale. a .5 ratio is what should feel balanced without considering style.

Pilsner DME - Time to boil?

I read that Pilsner malt should be boiled longer because it produce more DMS. Does it apply to Pilsner malt in DME form? Or can I just do a 60 minute boil?

    Bittering hop

So the hop used for bittering may leave somekind of flavors into the beer. But nobody knows for sure?

    Bittering hop

How does the bittering hop (60 minutes) change the profile of your brew. I know it's bitter, but I'm talking more about flavor/aroma. I read a lot of people that say they didn't like X hop as bittering hop. Is it only because it lend harsh bitter profile? or does it leave a flavor/aroma? I...

    BYO Magazine?

Awsome thank for the fast reviews. I see this seems just what I need. I lurk around HBT very often, but sometimes due to lack of time or the fact the information might be scattered a bit too much (Forum pattern) I miss a lot of stuff. Having a paper magazine with small and resumed articles save...

    BYO Magazine?

I'm currently thinking about subscribing to this magazine and I wanted to get reviews from people who have read/currently read this magazine. Is this any good? What's the main focus of the magazine... Is it about USA (local) brewery? or more Home brew ingredients/techniques focused? I live...

what temp controller? froze my Keg

Maybe try to put a fan that circulate the air to get an even temperature reading? I've read a post of a guy that said that his temperature prob is also offset by a good amount. You could test your prob with a reliable temperature reading and temperature normally let you control an offset on...

    Good hoppy pilsner?

Here we have a dry hopped pils and its fantastic. Dont stick the rules too much. Personally id follow a standard recipe and dry hop with 1oz of saaz to get a wondeful floral aroma.

    STC-1000 question

I'm preparing to build a controller for a fermentation chamber in a refregirator and I'm about to buy this : http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110V-120V-All-purpose-Digital-Temperature-Controller-STC-1000-With-sensor-/221218317516?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3381a3a4cc&_uhb=1#ht_3687wt_1163 I saw many...

Stir plate - Potentiometer and fan questions...

More info: Scavenged a fan from an old power supply. This is a DC12V 0.17A fan. Not written Brushless like the other one I had (which made me worry). I know it could be brushless too, let's just hope its not? So what potentiometer should I get if I have a 12V AD/DC Adapter (I guess it must...
