Modifying a kit to make a milk stout?

Thanks! I hope it works, worst case I have beer either way. :)

Puzzled with Northern Brewer Cream Ale

    I wouldn't worry too much about 0.006.

Modifying a kit to make a milk stout?

I bought a chocolate stout kit from Austin Homebrew since they are on sale for $20 and figured I'd make a milk stout out of it. So if I just ditch the maltodextrin and substitute in 1 pound of lactose instead that should work right? Also if I add in 1 pound of DME that should up the abv to...

    Solder stranded wire for STC-1000?

Take a closer look at how the wire is going into the slot, make sure it is positioned right.

    Using a secondary.

Generally I wait 2 weeks before moving to the secondary.

    starsan question

I usually make a 2.5 gallon batch with the 1/2oz of starsan then I dump about 1/2 gallon in my carboy and slosh it around and drain it out like most of the others. I fill up a spray bottle and spray it on most of the stuff I want to sanitize. For tubing I dump some in the tubing to fill it...

    bottle conditioning temperature for stout

My basement is 65 and I just did a java stout, it took almost 8 weeks to get the carbonation all the way up.

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

Small update. It took about 8 weeks in the bottle to get carbonation to a level that you would want in a beer. A lot longer than I expected, but I'm enjoying it now. Just wish I would have waited and those first 5 bottles would have been better.

    First raspberry wine recipe question

I was concerned that following the 3 gallon recipe plus adding additional raspberries would be too much? I would actually prefer a 3 gallon batch anyway.

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

Just an update to help the newbs like me :) I opened another bottle on Friday, approximately 15 days after bottling, and I heard a slight release of pressure upon popping the cap. There is slight carbonation now, I'd call it 40% to what I'd want. But feel a little better that its no longer...

    First raspberry wine recipe question

I have 1,626g of fresh frozen raspberries in the deep freezer my mom picked for me a while ago and I would like to make a wine out of them. I was wondering if I purchased the raspberry wine concentrate from Vinters Harvest...

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

I popped the top on one of the bottles this weekend because I couldn't wait any longer :) The flavor was good and I was happy with it but it was completely flat. I know that it takes a bit to bottle condition but I was thinking after 9 days that I'd have a little carbonation in it. Is this...

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

Well it's all bottled up and waiting. I tasted some of the it and its good, the coffee flavors come through nicely and not too strong. I was hoping for a little more stronger beer flavor since its a stout. I wouldn't say its watered down but its definitely not a Guinness either. We'll see in...

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

Just took another reading and its 1.016-1.018 again, so I guess its done. Just surprised it didn't finish a bit lower.

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

The only difference is that corrected 1.044 is 1.045. No coffee beans, it calls for 10oz brewed coffee added to secondary.

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

Those are all uncorrected numbers. The first one was at 76F and the last two were at 65F.

Midwest Java Stout - bottling and hydrometer readings

I finally got around to brewing my second batch of beer, having a kid puts a lot of things on hold! Anyway I brewed the Midwest Java Stout Kit on 12/6 and moved it over to secondary on 12/13. It had an OG reading of 1.044 and when I moved it to secondary a week later read at 1.016. Its now...

First beer, OG lower than recipe, worry?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. In the name of science on my next batch I'm going to take a reading like I did last time and then give it a vigorous stirring to thoroughly mix it up and then take another reading. It'll be interesting to see how much difference that makes.

First beer, OG lower than recipe, worry?

Don't you think with dumping a couple gallons of water on top that would have thoroughly mixed it up for an accurate reading?

First beer, OG lower than recipe, worry?

As of today the hydrometer reading is 1.009, which calculates to a 2.5% alcohol content beer. Definitely on the low side but oh well for a first try. Hopefully the next batch turns out better. I think my problem was that my stove top and patience level were too low for the first try and I...
