    yeast freezing

I thought I read in this forum, that slower freezing is better for viability down the road, although mine froze very quickly, and was still viable a week later. Barney

    yeast freezing

Thanks Pug, I went to a brewpub the other day, which is a 4 hour round trip, and the brew master there was nice enough to give me a quart of his lager yeast and ale yeast. After washing it down a bit, i have about 200 mls of solid yeast that i am going to split up and freeze a few vials, and...

    yeast freezing

Hey all, Just tried my first attempt at freezing a wyeast 1450, from a 2nd gen cream ale. Made a 1:4 solution glycerin/boiled H20. Then 10mls washed yeast and 10 mls glycerin solution. Put in fridge for 24 hours, then wrapped in ice pack, and put in cooler, then in freezer. My curiosity got...

    yeast freezing

Hi, I just boiled 1 of the tubes for 3 mins, and seems good. The screw cap still screws on tight, no distortion. I will be harvesting Dennys favorite from an ale in about a week, so no big loss there if things dont turn out right. I think if I boil a tube for 5 mins, then soak in iodophor, i...

    starter wort

Hi, I just finished brewing up a 5 gal batch, and i saved the last 1.5 liters dregs of the mash. It has a SG of 1.016. I plan on brewing again in a couple of days, and the batch will be a 1.049 Ale. Can i use the 1.016 to make a starter, or should i boil it, and add some DME to it. If so, how...

    commercial yeast harvest

Hi, Would like to try and harvest some commercial beer yeasts. I live in central vancouver island, and there doesn't seem to be a great selection to choose from at the local liquor/beer stores. There is a Saltspring Island brew that is unpasteurized/unfiltered, so i think that might be a good...

    just for fun

Yes, the extract was very dark, but i wasn't sure exactly what color Aussie Draught is supposed to look like. Probably quite light i would assume. Not too worried about color at this stage, but if it tastes ok, I will get some more and dry hop, and use DME. I just made my first all grain batch...

Over at my buddies brother-in-laws having a couple of beer, and he says to me if I wanted some coopers extract cans that he had in the garage. I says sure, so he gets me a can. The bottom is rusted, but still has plastic lid on top, with directions, and the yeast pack. I said, how freaking old...
