2016 Oberon - Anyone Harvesting the Yeast?

Started a small starter last week - dregs from 2 bottles into 200 ml of 1.02 starter. After 3 days fermentation completed and stepped up to 1000 (including the 250) in 1.03 starter. Moved up to 2000 ml starter on the stir plate last night. Great krausen and quick fermentation. Very pleased with...

Run fan in keezer full time?

I did the math on electricity costs - based on my local northern VA rates the fan would burn about 4-5 bucks worth of power a year.

    Mash efficiency through the roof

Good morning all - Brewed up a Vienna-Graf style lager this weekend and utilized a multi-step decoction mash (recipe below). Doughed in at 130, rest 30, upped to 140 for alpha, rest 30, upped to 150 for beta, rest 30, mash out to 168. Problem is that I ended up with a 1.061 OG in the...

Help me choose a conical - Morebeer 14 gallon or SsBrewtech BME Chronical.

You will like the ssbrewtech. I've had my half barrel chronical for a couple years with no problems. Not sure why folks say they have weldless fittings. Mine is all welded. Maybe the 7 gallon product or brew barrel do?

What lengths do you go for brewing safety?

Haha, great observation. I left the little one at home that day as it was snowing and she much preferred playing outside, to driving to the welding shop.

What process / technique / piece of equipment has improved your beer the most?!

"I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit-hole–and yet–and yet–it’s rather curious, you know, this sort of life! I do wonder what can have happened to me!" Trust me, it's a wild ride - have fun!

Which Temp Controller? Heating + Cooling

I now use a inkbird itc-308 (previously used a Ranco). The new unit allows me to control both heating and cooling. So far I've been happy. The inkbird is connected to a standup freezer which holds my 20 gallon conical perfectly.

    stuck at 1.020 (new problem)

I'd say that they are not stuck at all. Rather fermentation looks to be complete. Considering that you had a mash of 155 and 13% crystal malts, you should have a much higher level or residual (unfermentable) sugars in your wort. The malt bill for my IPA's contain less that 2-3% crystal and are...

Here goes, first all grain BAIB day!

I would suggest pulling back on the crystal malt to maybe 3% of your malt bill. You also may think of adding (replacing 2 row with) some Vienna malt (5-10%). By reducing the crystal and adding Vienna, you will retain a distinctive malt / bready backbone without the cloying sweetness from the...
