    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

another option for mail order: I live in Indianapolis and Great Fermentations has been in business for at least the 30 years I have been home brewing (same owner). They have a great staff and are always available by email or phone for questions or problems. They have a wide selection of grains...

Paintball canister to 16g mini co2 connection

I believe this version of adapter works with a normal regulator. I bought mine from Williams Brewing years ago but they now show out of stock. https://homebrewing.org/products/the-adapter-co2-regulator-to-paintball-tank-adapter

    Chasing a CO2 leak

sorry if I missed this. have you verified that the large o-ring on the keg lid is sealed properly? rather than a soap test I would fill the bathtub, pressurize the keg, then disconnect the gas line to the keg and put the keg into the bath tub. but if your keg is full, laying it on its side in...

    Crystal 60 in hoppy beers

Bobby_M: thanks for the suggestion to make a Vienna/Mosaic SMASH. I made it last month. I kegged after about 3 weeks in primary and force carbed it on 30 psi CO2 for about a week. it's great! I followed the hop profile suggestion you made in post 34. it will definitely be in my rotation! ken

    Skimming hot break poll

I boil on my outside deck which I am able to hose down after the boil is complete. so, I allow the hot break to boil over and spill onto the deck. I've noticed that the hot break foam is more dense and slightly brownish so that's what I allow to boil over. the "other" foam is white and much...

    Hydrometer Advice Needed

this is what you want. in addition to amazon, any homebrew shop will carry a similar hydrometer. sometimes referred to as a "triple scale" hydrometer. this is what I have been using for 20 years...

Spending the time on DIY kegerator or spending the coin on turnkey?

DIY: most 7 cu. ft. chest freezers will accommodate 3 kegs on the floor, and a 4th on the compressor hump (but take your measuring tape to the store). to take full advantage of the chest freezer, plus being able to use "proper" taps, you need to make a collar so you have clearance for the 4th...

    Hot mess fermentation

so are you saying that you have the ink bird controller heating the keg via the heat wrap, and the kegerator controller cooling the keg via the refrigeration? so the heat and the cooling are fighting each other hence the temp plot you posted. I agree with Dr Jeff. if you need to ferment in...

RIS. Advice needed, overshot my OG by a long shot

I ferment in 6-gal plastic carboys. after a couple of days I gently rock the carboy in a circular motion which gets the yeast and rub stirred up. I do it again after a couple more days. not sure it accomplishes anything, though.

    The Grocery Store Challenge

several years ago, Sam Calagione had a short-lived series on cable called Brew Masters. in one episode, he traveled to Peru to learn how to make Chicha. the best part was a short clip showing some of his employees who had volunteered to help chew and spit out 100 lb of corn to go into a batch...

How do you transport your refilled/full CO2 tank w/o a truck?

I'd be finding a different supplier. this sounds more like incompetency or poor training on the part of the person who filled it for you. the tare weight of a 2.5# steel tank is 9 lb. not sure what the "fill hardware" weight is, but maybe a couple of pounds? say 3 lb for argument. the tare...

    metering pump for sparge water?

since I started brewing many years ago, I have controlled the sparge flow rate with a needle valve on the outlet of my lauter tun. I have a sparge arm that I have never used, and would like to find a reasonably-priced metering pump to pump 170F water through the sparge arm into my lauter tun...

First 5 gallon batch using Digiboil

You might want to try boiling outside once to see the difference in time between an 18K btu stove burner and a 100k btu outdoor burner. Plus, when you have a boilover you just get your garden hose out and wash it away!

    Burner Problems

If your smallest drill bit is too large, you can use a twist tie from a loaf of bread etc, remove the plastic of paper from the wire. If that is too narrow, green florist’s wire (Michaels, hobby lobby) comes in a few different diameters, one of which might work.

What equipment should I get, dazed and confused.

I only do 5-gallon (nominal) batches. I usually have about 6 1/2 gal of wort at the start of the boil. I use a 10-gallon kettle. that gives plenty of headroom for the hot break foam. I bought the 10 because I determined that I would never brew anything larger than a 5-gallon batch. a good...

What equipment should I get, dazed and confused.

IIRC, garden variety turkey fryers are rated at around 60,000 BTU. I started with that, and it was fairly slow going, especially brewing outside when it was cold and windy. I moved to a blichmann burner, I think it was called the Top Tier burner, which I think was rated at 100,000 btu. their...

What equipment should I get, dazed and confused.

here are a few recommendations based on 20+ years of using a pretty basic setup. as others have mentioned, the sky's the limit on what you can spend on this hobby! in no particular order: 1). burner: I have a natural gas connection outside the house on my deck. I started with a turkey fryer...
