    just tried first brew...

I bottled a Hefe about 11 days ago. I chilled one on day 8 and popped it open to check carbonation. I used DME to prime so I was expecting it to still be rather flat. However it was carbonated well and a little to much as I got a pretty big head on the pour. It tastes very crisp on the first...

Lent sucks when you give up beer, and begin to obsess about beer.

Sorry to hear that. I don't know anything about your situation as I've been on a beer only diet for the last 15 years. :drunk:

    Damn Austin Homebrew Supply!!

Yea all mine were partial mash. I don't have the equipment yet to do all grain, nor the experience. Partial mash still allow for me to experiment and come out with a good beer. And each of the kits I purchased need different grains so bulk ordering grain is out of the question for me at this...

    How to check specific gravity?

FYI .... I have a thief and the day I first used it i said to myself " this thing is going to take 10 dunks to fill". Then I realized I wasn't letting the beer equalize inside the thief. There is a small hole that the beer has to fill up into, to get your sample. If you stick it in the carboy...

Is this better or worse than Craigtube?

Yea I watched all of this too. My wife said " Are you for real, this B.... is mixing crap in a bucket and she expects good beer?"

Recipe for an inexpensive blonde, beer?

I completely understand you wanting to go all grain but just because you go AG doesn't mean your going to end up with a good beer, especially doing it for the first time. I'd like to brew all grain in the future as I collect more equipment to make such a jump. I expect that I will not be sharing...

Suspect Stout is stalled due to low temp - suggestions appreciated!

So I took a gravity reading and found that the batch appears to be in good shape. You could smell the alcohol and the reading was at 1.020 after 1 week. Being I screwed up the OG I did some math and figured out I must have had a little to much beer on the brain when I did that reading because I...

    Priming with DME

Yea there seems to be people on both sides of the coin. Both sides have valid points, but I guess it comes down to preference. Some say they can taste when dextrose is used and other say they like the flavor of the DME better. In either case I found some other helpful threads on this topic...

    Priming with DME

Hummm thats the first time I've heard this. I understand some like sugar and others like DME but I havn't heard DME is not a good idea to use. From what I read it's preferred over sugar. to avoid off flavors. I might have to put bottling on hold tonight till I can read more.

    Priming with DME

I'm about to pull up the chart so that I can calculate how much DME to use to batch prime 5 gallons of Hefeweizen. My LHBS said I should just use 1 1/4 cups. I have read a bunch of threads on this issue and it looks like 3.5 is the normal carbonation. My issue is I'm going to be using various...

Suspect Stout is stalled due to low temp - suggestions appreciated!

I have the same issue right now with my Irish Stout. Was the kit you used the Mountmelick? I also tossed the undated yeast packed it came with in a draw and used liquid Yale yeast instead. The kit suggests you use 2 4lb cans to make a better beer. I didn't follow any of the can's directions and...

    kettle size question

I don't think it's a problem. After boiling the water you really should not have a cover on the pot being boil over will happen to quick for you to notice. Without the cover there's not much condensation as it gets cooked off as steam. I think the boil off ratio is 1 gallon per hour. So if your...

    New Brewer from New Jersey

Welcome I'm a noob here myself. My wife likes it but she's not motivated to help or really understand the process that take place. She's happy to drink it though so that's enough for me since she's not complaining about the constant messy sink or the money being spent at the local home brew shop.

    another jersey brewer

Don't apologize to me......YOU'RE the one who decided to call yourself DIRTYjerz. For me though, It's funny how now that "Jersey Shore" made it on MTV, you guys are all so proud to be from Jersey. Last I remember, everybody from jersey was passing through Staten Island to get to Manhattan to...

    Dirty Jersey

I filtered my Hefeweizen (that I should be bottling this weekend) through a brita. But it was tap water. The Irish Stout I started almost a week ago I used bottled water because I just happen to be in walmart getting some other crap and saw 1 gallon jugs of drinking water for 79 cents. It took...

    kettle size question

If your doing extract brewing such as the Mr. Beer kit, extract cans or kits usually come with enough ingredients to brew 5 gallons. They also usually call for you to make a partial wort where you boil (this varies) 2 to 3 gallons in a pot and then transfer it to the primary which would contain...
