    Does vacuum remove oxygen?

I took a stab at this math for a different thread a while back. There’s some guesswork with thickness, but relatively close to being able to take some decent vacuum. Haven’t tested one yet. Sorry for the units... “So a cylindrical tank's (or pipe's) capability of withstanding external pressure...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

This is one I did back in September. Also my first warm fermented lager (and lager and general). This is for a 12 gallon batch. I really like how it turned out. Batch Size: 12 gallons Mash: 60 minutes @ 152F Boil: 60 minutes OG: Target: 1.055, Measured: 1.054 FG...

    Baltic Porter. Help?

No problem. Hope it turns out great! If you are getting into recipe building you certainly don’t need it, but Beersmith is a really helpful program and will do those hop addition calculations for you and lots of other ones.

    Baltic Porter. Help?

Great style. Here are the BJCP style guidelines if you are trying to brew it to style: OG: 1060 - 1090 FG: 1016 - 1024 ABV: 6.5 - 9.5 IBU: 20 - 40 SRM: 17 - 30 They aren’t hop forward beers so you likely could just go for a bittering addition at the start of the boil. Noble hop varieties...

Maybe a way to cask a beer..

Sounds like a cool project! There are some who have been successful with Corny kegs and a low pressure CO2 blanket. Some just get an extra CO2 tube and replace the liquid dip tube and then lay the keg on its side at a slight angle. There are also some who have made their own beer engines. Here...

    Diacetyl reduction post fermentation?

I haven’t either but there are others here that have. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/primary-fermentation-in-corny-keg.127876/ I was thinking about that pressure relief valve and it’s actually male and the nozzle on the lid is female. But 1/2” silicone hose fits nicely over it...

    Diacetyl reduction post fermentation?

You could unscrew the PRV and put some tubing over the port and take that to a jar of starsan. Like a mini blow off tube. Never tried it, but should work. Shouldn’t be nearly as vigorous of a fermentation as the initial one.

Made Belgian Candi syrup in the oven,...

Thanks. I’ll have to give this a try. I had stumbled across the other thread but like the simplicity of the oven idea, but to be fair I’ve only tried caramelizing lactose before. Which went ok. My wife makes caramels so maybe she could help me [emoji51]. Do either of you know what the alkalinity...

That is awesome! A couple of questions: what is the potash for? How long did your larger batch take in the oven?

    Distilling to get non-alcoholic beer?

Let us know how it turns out! Seeing this and that other thread go active again made me want to give this a go as well. Planning to brew this weekend and will split the batch, and hopefully do a NA beer making process 3-4 weeks later. A note on your temperature above. Since you have an...

    Distilling to get non-alcoholic beer?

This thread has some good info. Creating an NA (Or...how I neutered my beer) https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/index.php?threads/Creating-an-NA-%28Or%2E%2E%2Ehow-I-neutered-my-beer%29.39433/ Also it is possible to create a vacuum system on a budget, but does require condensing. I think I...

Creating an NA (Or...how I neutered my beer)

So a cylindrical tank's (or pipe's) capability of withstanding external pressure is dependent on four things: Length without reinforcement (in this case the height of the keg), diameter, wall thickness, and the material properties. I ran the math using ASME BPVC VIII UG-28. If you assume the...

Creating an NA (Or...how I neutered my beer)

At a certain pressure and temperature yes. Except I wouldn’t recommend using a corny keg. It will likely crumple under vacuum.

Sour Stout! Tried and true recipes

Yeah first sip straight out of the fridge you definitely don't get much else. I let warm to 50F for both beers when doing the side by side. You do get a bit more but still dominant with tartness.

Sour Stout! Tried and true recipes

I don't know if it lacked depth, more that the tartness overpowered anything else that might have been there. Kinda back to @505-Brewer 's comment "All Tart no Darkness". I still really enjoyed it though. Very bright. That sounds awesome. Let us know if you take a quality control sample while...

Sour Stout! Tried and true recipes

Ok so got the side by side done tonight. Here is the pour of the ToD. It had a brief head that dissipated rapidly. Nose: not as much funk as mine. You can almost smell the lactic. Taste: First off, top notch beer really like it. Quite sour and tart. It took me a while to actually get past...

Sour Stout! Tried and true recipes

Soooo... My wife and I went cross country skiing tonight and got back too late to open up the ToD but we did do a tasting of the Too Sour By Half. We should be able to taste them side by side this Thursday. But rather than deliver nothing, here is half of what was promised. Nose: you can tell...
