    Can bottle shape affect taste

Your beer may need more time. I've never heard that bottle shape can affect taste or conditioning time, but I suppose anything is possible. As far as your friend and her alcoholic boyfriend....no idea :)

First real taste of my first brew

Welcome and congrats on your first brew!

    First non-kit brew today!

Just a quick update: I've noticed a TON of yeast rafts(I ASSUME they are yeast related) floating at the top of my fermenter. This being only my fourth total batch, I've not seen this before. While I understand that it's nothing to worry about, is this typical of S-33?

    First non-kit brew today!

I just finished brewing my first non-kit beer. IMO it was just as easy as working with a kit(although I've only used the Mr. Beer kits before this). Anyway, here's the recipe(which is an altered version of a Shed Mountain Ale Clone recipe I found elsewhere on the forums) Boil Volume: 1...

    Upcoming...

Going into the fermenter this evening - A slightly altered Shed Mountain Ale Clone, original recipe found on this site. Going into ME this evening - Last of a pale ale I brewed at christmas time and some Long Trail Double Bag to top off the ol' tank :)

better to use tap or grocery store water for full boil ?

Tap water is fine for full boil. Any chemical contaminants such as chlorine will be boiled off within 10 minutes and microbes shouldn't be any longer than that. For top off water, either use store bought water, filtered water or pre-boil some water(if you think you need 2 gallons, boil 3) and...

Ever used a gamma lid on a primary fermenter bucket?

Another option to consider if strength traning isn't your style is to use snap ring pliers. These are pliers that expand the jaws when you squeeze the handle. If you are gentle with them there should be no fear of damage when removing the lid. Iirc I saw an episode of homebrewerTV on youtube...

    Have I lost this batch?!?

assuming that the temps you took you measurements at were at 60 degrees F, with an OG of 1.070 and a FG of 1.015 the ABV should be 7.3%. The only reason I can think of for it to be 'watery' feeling at this point would be if you used a lot of table sugar when you brewed it(adjuncts like table...

What to do with other Mr. Beer HME?

One of the things I've learned is the last beer usually turns out to be the best of the batch, thus reinforcing the 'patience is a virtue' mantra. With the month of conditioning time recommend that before you drink the next one from the batch you allow it to chill in the refrigerator for a week...

    Bottle or wait? Or other?

Have you checked your SG recently? I wouldn't bottle until you have two or three consistent SG readings. Bubbles in an airlock aren't a reliable indicator of active fermentation. As your beer ferments, some of the CO2 will be absorbed into solution and simple temperature changes can be enough...

Green apple taste appeared after bottling

It could be a couple of different things. If your bottles or bottling equipment wasn't sanitized properly, you could have let something in(lactobacillus or acetobacter) which could cause a sour/apple taste. Also if you used more than the recommended amount of carb drops that could cause it...

What to do with other Mr. Beer HME?

Welcome to the obsession! I also started with a mr. beer kit from my wife at chirstmas. First brew was a standard recipe(west coast pale ale), second started with the irish stout kit with some additions, and third started with the weizen kit from mr. beer, with some specialty grains. the...

    Carbonation

if you are over carbonated, and you reached the expected FG, then IMO the only solution is to cut out some of the priming sugar

    2 1/2 gallon batches

You can go toMr Beer LBK for a smaller fermenter. They are going for $10 right now. It is listed as 2 gallons, but you actually put more wort in it when you ferment. guess you lose some to trub while it ferments.

Beginners idea for a brew log.

Looks pretty neat. I especially like how you can have pictures with the info - sometimes pictures are worth more than words. Only question - is it searchable in some way? a year from now when you are looking for something about a brew you did, will you be able to easily find what you want? As...

    Hello from NH

Yeah, my plan is to use up the extract kits I have then go to specialty grains with extracts and a hop schedule. For now, I'm going to continue to use the Mr. Beer fermenter as I don't have space for doing 5 gal brews yet. Once I have a spot set up I'll probably still use the LBK from mr. beer...

    Help with recipe please

So, a couple of years ago my wife and I went on a tour of Redhook in Portsmouth and really enjoyed their summer wheat they were brewing. I'd like to clone that beer if possible. I'm not sure if anyone here has ever tried it(I can't find any information online about it so no reviews for...

    Hello from NH

Hey all, I recieved a Mr. Beer kit for christmas from my wife, as she knew I had been wanting to brew my own for a few years. I tried the kit that came with the setup(Mr. Beer West Coast Pale Ale thats bottled now, but will be carb/conditioning until Feb). A small taste test before bottling...
