How do you take accurate pre-boil gravity readings? I can never seem to get everything mixed up well enough to take an accurate pre-boil gravity. My pre-boil gravities end up reading a point or 2 away from the starting gravity or sometimes even higher than the post-boil gravity. So it's...
When I had the issue, rye malt was about 9% of the grain bill. But I have a beer coming up where it's over 50% of the grain bill. So I'm nervous it's going to be another disaster. I think I'll just widen the gap a bit and hopefully minimize the flour like particles.
No, just a big fan of Cascade, haha. But I do work part time for a 3 BBL brewery so if it's too much, maybe I can pawn some off to them and convince me to let me brew something up with them.
Not planting anything new but looking forward to giving my 6 Cascade plants a full year of growth this year. Last year I had to fix the drainage in my planter beds and didn't get the hops planted until early summer. Still got some growth but I think this year will be a good haul.
Has anyone had issues with using rye in the Anvil? I use a bag in the malt pipe and last time I used it, I milled it as fine as I normally do my normal grain. So much fine rye particles got through the bag that it ended up scorching the bottom and I had to use a propane setup to finish the brew...
Anyone get a Brewzilla false bottom that didn't fit inside the Anvil? I ordered the one for the 35L system off Williams Brewing and it is actually too big to fit in the kettle.
I'm also on the PBW, hot water, starsan train. As for kegs just sitting around, I'll rinse them all out and just let them sit with the lid off to dry out. Of course they get hit with starsan again before I fill it.
The pump is a good pump. You get it and hoses for $100 so you can't beat that. At some point I'd like to upgrade to a Riptide but for now, I'm happy with the Anvil pump.
I love using my Tilt. It's never going to be as accurate for gravity readings but it lets you track where things are at. Especially useful if you are doing hop additions at certain points in fermentation. I like it even more with a tiltpi set up to take readings every 15 min.
I don't bother. After cooling, I give it a hard hit with a paint stirrer attached to my drill and then give it 20 min. By turning the output port, I don't get much hops into the fermenter.
I have the 10.5 gal version on 220v so I'm usually boiling 6.5 gallons or more. But I have my boil off set to 0.8 gal/hr but once I hit boil, I turn the power down to 85%. You don't need a super vigorous boil and 85% still gets a good rolling boil. 0.8 gal/hr at 85% has been pretty spot on.
The first kveik brew I did I had it around 80F and it actually stalled about halfway through. After I wrapped it up to get it up to 90F it just dive bombed. Next kveik brew I just left it in my hot garage in the middle of the summer and it went from grain to glass in a week.
You could also do something like this if you're going for something stronger and will be using more than 16 lbs of grain. My max in the actual AF is using almost 17lbs of grain with a no sparge. But I'm also using a bag in the malt pipe and also squeezing the bag so my grain absorption is set to...
