    Cider with oats?

I have been reading about oats being used in some ciders to give a better "mouth feel". I'm unsure what that is but I was thinking of trying it. I have a gallon of fresh apple juice ready to make some cider and was wondering if Porridge Oats that are rolled will do anything fr the cider...

    Tap water?

The problem I have with boiling is that I only have the 1 vessel, I have nowhere to store the pre boiled 25 litres. Is a full boil using 25 litres of boiled water? If so wont that really soften the plastic bin or even ruin the beer kit? normally I use like 4 litres of boiled to mix the kit...

    Tap water?

Hello, Im going to start a new brew tomorrow using a kit. I have my 25litre fermenting bin and my kit ready. I was reading earlier about tap water and off tastes and was wondering if i should try and purify my water a bit. I think Scotland has good water, its better than any other tap...

Barley Wine - Ready for bottling?

Unfortunately I have no place that's cold, I have a hut that gets cold at night but during the day its warm. The beer seems really clear except little floaters on the top and maybe an inch down. Little brown speckles, when i put my hydrometer in a few stuck to it and they basically...

Barley Wine - Ready for bottling?

Hello, I started my Youngs Barley Wine kit on 25th of July. The pack said 10 days but in another thread I got told wait a while longer. That's been 3 1/2 weeks now and the little flecks of brown stuff still haven't sunk to the bottom so im thinking they will probably always be there. I...

Slight problem, need advice on sediment

http://i.imgur.com/XAxo5.jpg This is what it looks like, I have yet to take a reading but would like to know if this seems normal. My previous homebrew didn't look like this at all.

Slight problem, need advice on sediment

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I will keep it in the fermentation bucket for another few weeks at least as this seems to be the one bit of advice everyone gives. About the fresh yeast before bottling, I have never done this or ever heard of it. I normally just add about half a teaspoon...

Slight problem, need advice on sediment

Hello, I started a kit of barley wine (I'm posting here as it is actually beer) from Youngs 12 days ago, in the first day the fermentation went a little crazy with a massive froth. After about 6 days the froth started dissipating and now its gone. The problem is I have little bits of...

Just started my first kit, need a little advice.

Ok well thats been 8 days, it has had a constant value of 0.996 for 3 days. One thing i have noticed is that when i take a sample out to test its like the top 2" is clear but under that its cloudy and has little white/brown bubbles. Should I wait a few more days?

Just started my first kit, need a little advice.

Slight problem. the instructions didnt state I had to take a reading on my hydrometer before fermentation so i dont have a base line to see whats happening. When i did put the hydrometer in its giving a reading of 1.006, I have never used one before so no idea what that actually means.

Just started my first kit, need a little advice.

The yeast was in a plain sachet with no ID on it so im not 100% sure. either way it does state 7 days in the bucket and then 14 days in the bottles. From what i have read im thinking maybe 10-12 days in the container just to get it as clear as possible before bottling. Then the bottles will...

Hey, At the weekend i bought the Youngs U-Brew Lager Kit. I know its nothing fancy but its a nice cheap starting point. I have 44 pint bottles saved up from some nice vintage cider ready to be filled. On Monday I started the kit and followed the instructions, everything is going great...

    Cider tasting a little bland

Hello Made a batch of cider about 3 weeks ago which is still in the demijohn. I syphoned a little to taste and it has next to no taste, and the little it does have tastes watered down. It was made with 5l fresh apple juice 400g heather honey small cup of really strong tea yeast...

Golden crumb like sediment at the bottom of bottles.

Thanks for the info, one thing I notice is that the bottle I drank without this sediment had a chemically taste but this stuff tastes amazing.
