    Homemade wort chiller?

I made mine... You have to be really careful of kinking. If you don't have a roller (who does?) there are tricks. I live in a cold climate so I made mine in the middle of winter: filled it with water and let it freeze, then formed with the ice providing lateral support. I've heard others use...

Strange white stuff from drinking water hose / RV hose

Trying to grow it isn't a bad idea. I used to farm my yeast so I have the gear around - just checked, out of agar and my pre-made plates are all dried up (even though I tried to seal them). Agar I guess it is! I won't be brewing with this again. I may just get a new hose, but $30 every two...

Help me decide whether or not to keep this brew kettle

I BIAB in a tallboy 8 gallon with a thermometer probe. The bag does snag, but I've used it now since 2014 without any issue. I made the bag myself, back then I didn't see any BIAB options locally. Now of course you can buy bags for cheap [other post]

Strange white stuff from drinking water hose / RV hose

Hey everyone, I have been brewing in my attached garage - just inside the house is a laundry hookup not being used, so I use it as my water supply. I bought a 50ft RV drinking water hose, put some fittings on the end, and it works fantastic. Today I noticed some white.. things floating in the...

    Simple 240v solution

Thanks guys! dkenny - that kit looks like it doesn't have any sockets, so you hard wire in and out. Is that what you did? Do you have any photos / more details?

    Simple 240v solution

Hi all! After about a year of not making beer - packing, staging, moving, unpacking, fixing, etc., I have moved, and about to start making beer again. I have looked around the forums but couldn't find what I"m looking for - sorry if I missed it. I am brewing in my garage, and have already...

Help me identify microscope pics of yeast / bacteria

Just chiming in to say how awesome this is. However, I'm not sure if this makes me WANT a microscope, or never look at my yeast for fear of what I'll find...

Hep me figure out the reason for my off flavor

I always read that rubber smell was autolysis, which is dead / old yeast building up, but nothing from your procedure strikes me as odd that way. Even if you had a little bit of old yeast in your frozen batch, I don't imagine it'd be enough. Thought I'd mention it any way.

Did I get enough growth in my starter?

I agree- sounds about right. Post a picture if you can.

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

Hey butterpants, if you feel that my framing would discourage people from looking into and learning about the proper way to count, given that the large number of variables involved in freezing makes it hard to calculate off-hand, please suggest an amendment and I'll add it. E.g., if you have a...

    Beersmith User?

I measured my equipment, did some basic calibration (boil off rates, etc.) and started from there. Once that all worked, just keep good records when you make beer and tweak it. E.g., if your efficiency was off and it's not other issues, modify that, if your volumes are off due to boil or grain...

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

***YAAWN*** ***STRETCH*** I just read the whole thread! My equipment is here, and I'm ready to start my own yeast bank. Thanks to everyone who contributed!! Since a lot of people say that they do not read the whole thread, here is a summary of what I learned. This may be useful for others...

    Thermowell for Thermostar Controller

I have had only mediocre results with taping the probe to the outside of the carboy, but if you read down the forum a little, others have had good results that way. For my thermowell I use http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/Stopper_Thermowell_p/stopper-thermowell.htm I am sure you can find...

    Anyone see yeast do this?

Wow! Is there some kind of thickening agent in there? I would be worried about forgetting to rinse out soap or something.. I'm curious as to how it tastes. I always ferment in glass these days and have never seen anything like that!

Fermentation Bucket lid covered in yeast

I used to leave it when I used bucket fermenters. It's clean, and just yeast and CO2, so you're good to go!

    Beersmith User?

I use BS extensively. You can customize everything, and once you have your equipment dialed in, you can "scale" other recipes to your equipment, and it does a very good job! I also like the printouts that I glue into my brewing note book (print them 2-up). I also like beersmithrecipes.com...

    Fermentation temp

Wow congratulations! As for your question.. talk about opening a can of worms. TL;DR - both are okay and can make great beer. My guess is that you want more detail, however :) With my own fridge I did a comparison between ambient and in-wort with a SS thermo-well. The ambient air resulted in a...
