How much yeast for a stout?

I made an Imperial chocolate stout and only pitched 1 packet and fermentation stalled out. I had to add a second after 3 weeks when I took my initial readings. Save yourself the trouble about having to do it later and pitch 2 upfront....

How did you get started homebrewing?

Was at a friends birthday party he threw for his kids. A guy showed up with a case of different home brews. Tried 2 of them - loved em - got into the discussion of cost, difficulty, time - 2 years later I have taken over my dining room with equipment (SWMBO is not thrilled) and now there is...

    hello from NJ

I usually pay 6.99 from BW which makes it a couple bucks cheaper than MWS. I find that even with shipping it is a few dollars cheaper than BA in Freehold.

    Sweet Stout Deception Cream Stout

I have tried a couple - its been in the bottle about 4 weeks. Good head retention and lacing. Definitely goes through 3 phases - sweet to start, coffee intermediate, and finishes roasty. I am a little surprised by the bitterness. I know I used a variety of hops I had laying around so I am...

Mashing with or without your specialty grains included

I am trying to get a little wiser on this subject as I have done one partial mash. I have read several posts as well as specific sections in brew books so I understand the function of a mash versus steeping but I dont recall if its better to do them separately or not. For the mash I performed I...

    Sweet Stout Deception Cream Stout

I just bottled a similar version of this today using ingredients that I had laying around - I used dark and light DME rather than amber and wheat and used a variety of hops (Nugget, Galena, Cascade and Goldings). The grains and lactose were the same and used 1084. The beer smells great and has...

Munich Helles Dead Guy Clone (Extract & AG- see note)

I cold crashed it 4 hrs so I could decant. Not sure how much I got out of suspension but it did aggressively ferment. I didnt blow the airlock - some minor foam though from the star-san. I pitched at 67 - a day and half in it exothermed to 72-73 so I wrapped it in a wet towel and have kept it at...

decanting vs not decanting yeast starter

Yea that is exactly what I did - I crashed it for about 4hrs and did a slow boil to allow it to heat up to room temp. - my OG was a little a high from the evaporation but not concerning. This morning my airlock - has a nice foam head on it and is bubbling away....hopefully there is enough yeast...

decanting vs not decanting yeast starter

Nice......I'm going to take your original advice and try to cool it down and decant as much off as i can......worse case I will have a new baseline of what I can and cant do with my yeast starter for this beer.....
