    Split Boil

i do all grain split boils all the time. the trick is really to space out the starts so when one is finishing boil the other one still has 15 minutes left so you can cool with your IC for 15, then cool the next one. unless you have two chillers that is. i have a 5 gal and a 7.5 gal pot (the...

    First decoction mash

awesome. so i should do a rest at 158 for 10 minutes before bringing up to a boil, and stir the crap out of it so it doesn't stick. yeah, this is weyermann vienna, so you're saying: dough-in (70 F) acid rest (105 F) hochkurz (140 F) dext (155 F) mash out (170 F)? thanks for the help!

    First decoction mash

so i'm about to embark upon my first decoction since the temps in nyc are supposed to drop to the low 70s which means i won't die of dehydration when i run the stove in my apartment for about 4 hours straight. but, onto the decoction, i figured i'd make a VERY simple vienna lager. (yeah...

Wyeast 3724 Belgian Saison - they were right!

I just finished brewing a saison with this (it's carbing right now). Same thing -- vigorous start, then nothing, hovered around 1.035. Wrapped it in some blankets, stuck it in a very hot closet, 2 weeks later down to 1.015, then 2 weeks after that down to 1.002. Taste is phenomenal

    Help With Stir Plate Please!

Also, the solder on the green wire is horrible, I know :). It's been a while. It does NOT, however, touch the Earth terminal on the switch. That's merely an optical illusion.

    Help With Stir Plate Please!

So following instructions from the My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build I obtained all the parts from Radio Shack I would need. I had a Nokia cell charger lying around (5.7V 800mA) that I stripped the wires too and connected as in the tutorial, but when I turn on the switch, the fan doesn't...

    Blueberry Base...

so i actually just made a blueberry cream ale AND was up in maine on vacation and visiting atlantic brewing (bar harbor blueberry ale) -- apparently they add their blueberries during the boil, and use whole ones, so they're probably also adding some pectic enzyme. my blueberry cream ale came...

    Atlantic Brewing Company's Ginger Beer

I was just on vacation up in Maine and stopped by the Bar Harbor facility for Atlantic Brewing. Saw they had a ginger beer (they only carry the real ale and the blueberry ones in Brooklyn sadly) and it's awesome. Says it's a wheat beer and i know they use ginger in the boil, but i couldn't...

Getting 12 gallons up to boil

i would love for simplicity to be able to heat my water in the same unit that eventually does the boil. thanks for the calculations dwarven_spirits. the problem is i live in an apt and can't use anything that burns a fuel that isn't my gas stove, which has a hard enough time boiling 6.5...

Getting 12 gallons up to boil

hey all. do you think 4000 watts of electric power can get 12 gallons of wort up to a boil? i'm building out an electric RIMS and i am trying to figure out how much power i'll need to get this up and going. also, any downsides to using the kettle as a direct-fire HLT as well? thanks!
