    Store Wort for yeast starter

Resurrecting an old thread. 👍🏽 I have used second runnings for starter wort for a couple years now. If the gravity is too low I boil it on the stove while my beer wort is boiling until I get 1.035 - 1.040. I then cool it, put it in PET soda bottles and freeze. Be sure to leave a couple inches...

    How much priming sugar?

Temperature is the temperature the beer finishes fermenting and conditioning at. Not the temperature it is cold crashed to, unless it is cold crashed in a pure Co2 environment and kept cold for several days.

US-05 as bottling yeast in long cold-conditioned IPA

How do you add the yeast to the beer before bottling? I usually dose individual bottles with sugar then fill and cap. I had my first experience with an imperial porter/brown ale that didn’t carbonate. It was fermented with Nottingham and stayed in the fermenter for several weeks. Notty flocks...

How do you clean your bottles?

I triple rinse bottles immediately after emptying them into a glass, then store them upside down. Before bottling I run them through the dishwasher with no soap on the sanitize setting. Then fill and cap them. Been doing this for a few years now with no problems.

    Never had a NEIPA

Just to be clear, I used that term in jest and I don’t think Mr. Yeastwood had any nefarious intent starting this thread. I just find it curious that the NEIPA subject inspires such heated discussion and sometimes strong emotion.

    Never had a NEIPA

There is clearly an argumentative element to all this NEIPA hate speech. Some folks just seem to want to stir the pot and sit back and watch, then stir it some more. Some, or many even, genuinely don’t like the style but aren’t so militant in voicing their distaste. What I don’t understand is...

    Homemade PBW Recipe

Have I misunderstood or is this in error? I thought it was Trisodium Phosphate. I have no chemistry background but those sound different to me.

Name That Skyline - Picture Game

I could not resist a little cross thread talk. That looks like a horny gollach. Is Cornwall correct or might that be in Scotland?

    Make IPA Clear Again

This thread is 5 years old, the hazy style has persisted for what, 10 years now? American IPA since the 1990s. It does seem to be going away rather slowly. Always been useful for a good rant though.

    Auto Siphons 3/8" vs 1/2"

3/8 inch siphon fits through the small mouth in a gallon jug. That may be helpful for small batch brewers.

    Never had a NEIPA

Perhaps we need the style gods to set a definition of what is a proper lawnmower beer is before the whole style gets perverted. And then there’s the question of when does it stop being a lawnmower and become a tractor?

    Wort Refuses to Leave Bag

I heard someone say, squeeze it like it owes you beer. 😁

    Keto-friendly Brewing?

If one uses it in the mash, it will not go as low as in the fermenter. The boil will denature it. I have been working on a hoppy lite beer that finishes 1.005-6 with around 4% ABV. I just use it in the mash. Light or Lite hoppy beer recipe process

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

Not sure if it was imperial measure or not but all the bars in Alberta in the 1970s sold beer in 10 oz glasses. I haven’t been there since then. There was a line on the glass to allow for foam. I particularly liked that they were only 25 cents. Ordered by the dozen. I don’t know if this applied...

    would you bottle this beer?

A lot of this comes down to people’s tolerance for risk and imperfection. Those tolerances vary widely from one person to the next. I once dropped a cleaning towel into my cooled kettle of wort. Clearly not sanitary. I have a high tolerance for risk, so I took the towel out and carried on. The...

topic question: would you bottle this beer? HBT in a nutshell. 🤣

    Your First Brew

First brew was in 1979 or 80 from a recipe in a paperback book. A can of unknown origin malt extract and some whole hops, German I think. I honestly don’t remember where I got those. Partial boil on the stove top, fermented in a plastic trash bin sanitized with Clorox and secondary in a 5 gallon...

    Getting yeast from commercial bottles

I have propagated yeast from cans and bottles a few times. There are some how to threads already here if you want to search for them, or ask some more questions here. I look at it this way; for the price of a four or six pack I can get the yeast and enjoy the beer also. Or I could just buy...

    Rice Mash Method

I am planning an IPL or Cold IPA as my next brew and researching the use of rice. I see people lobbying hard for a cereal mash using malted barley, temperature rest and then boiling and others that say to simply boil the rice. What is the difference in outcome between the two processes? Boiling...
