Finally trying my hand at a Helles Lager

I second that WLP860 is a great yeast. It's pretty much my house yeast for all German lagers now.

stupid boil question (on the fly)

After you get a few no sparge under your belt, you can see what you are averaging for efficiency and adjust recipes accordingly. Been doing no sparge brewing for about 9 years now, 3+ with an AIO. What AIO do you have, as most basket systems should keep the grain in it? With my Foundry the...

Can you get used/accustomed to smoked beer?

That first pint of a smoked beer is like sensorily overload to the palate, but it seems that with each pint after that, the palate/our minds are like oh yeah, I remember this. Made a rauchbier last year that with my first pour, I was nope, I used way to smoked malt, but after a few more...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Hopefully brewing a German Leichtbier Saturday if I can finally shake this head congestion/cold that's going on two weeks...and if we don't get a blizzard here in eastern Mass. Tracks are all over the place.

Gallons Brewed History + Updates needed

The downward trend is not really shocking, with homebrew shops closing left and right over the last few years, AHA memberships dropping like flies etc...the hobby is definitely on a downward spiral. My club had 30 plus members before Covid...we have maybe 9 now, but only 5 that show up for...

    Anvil Brewing Equipment

Anvil stuff is pretty good. I have been using an Anvil Foundry all in one system for a few years now without any real issues. Before that, I used the anvil burner when I brewed out doors, and it did the job. Anvil is a subsidiary of Blichmann Engineering, who have been making great brewing...

    Pilsen vs Pilsner

Pilsen and Pilsner are basically the same, as is Pilsener. Pilsen is the city in what is now Czechia, Pilsener literally means "from Pilsen", and over the years that got shortened to Pilsner. So when you see Pilsen malt or Pilsner malt, they are the same thing except each maltster will have...

    Brown ale help

Are you talking the runaway from 12/3 to 12/5 where it went from 1.029 to 1.005? If so, my guess is the krausen may have crashed and the Tilt got covered with it and was throwing off readings.

BYO - no more printed magazines

Not liking that they are going to digital only, but for those who like paper version, as I expect most of us older subscribers do, usually there is a way to print online magazines. I do it every now and then with Zymurgy. It allows you to save as a PDF and then print it off on your home...

Which is the more accurate water calculator? AI or Brewers friend?

Not familiar with Brewers Friend water calculator, but one thing is which type of Calcium Chloride are either using, anhydrous (100% CaCl2) or dihydrate, which is CaCl2 that has absorbed water from the air, which most any calcium chloride will be, once the container is open. I did an...

    Porter style

Yeah definitely not. He did have this recipe in BYO in December 2013 and in the article he mentioned he was "reconstructing" a 1744 London Porter written by a William Ellis.

    Porter style

I have made this historical porter a few times...1744 Porter It's from Terry Foster's Porter book. Have had good success with it in comps as an English Porter and as a Pre-Prohibition Porter. I believe a few years back someone won gold at Nationals with the same base recipe.

District of Columbia What a grim month for DC area brewers: RIP MyLHBS and Annapolis HB.

Bummer. Lost my LHBS here in Mass a couple years ago. Has not slowed down my brewing any, as I just order online like I did before the shop had opened, but it really puts a crimp on getting sacks of grain. What really hurt though was it was our location for our club meetings and without a...
