What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

Tie between Pete's Wicked Summer Brew and McFarlane's Wheat - haven't had either in years.

    Where are my Manhattan drinkers?

Yeah, I like that too. Usually go "perfect" - 2 parts bourbon or rye, 1/2 part dry vermouth, 1/2 part sweet vermouth, dash of bitters. WI_Wino, I'll have to try the brandy manhattan for a change up!

Easy weldless/solderless bulkhead for Coleman 48 qt rectangular cooler?

Hey all, Cracked my mash tun cooler, and rebuilding a bulkhead. I have a copper pipe manifold which already fits this cooler, just want to come up with a decent bulkhead which doesn't require soldering or welding. Can anyone give me some guidance for a simple parts list? Ideally, supplied...

    Carbonation pressure and Serving pressure

I figured out the lengths of lines and pressures for 2(8 psi), 2.5(12 psi), 3.0(18psi), serving at 40°, and made a series of liquid lines with quick disconnects - change beer and desired carb level, swap out liquid line. Dual CO2 reg., so can and have served two different carb levels at the...

    Carroll County - Here's a decent place for a CO2 fill

Westminster Fire Extinguisher: 150 Airport Drive, Unit 10, Westminster, MD 21157 Filled my 10# tank for $12.95. My wife took it in, they filled in in 10min while she waited. Hydrostatic testing, don't know how much that costs, and isn't while you wait - next day kind of thing, they said...

    WLP 500 Starter Issues

x2 on WLP 500 being a slow starter. I brewed a dubbel this past Sat, and made a 1/2 gal starter of WLP 500 on the 8th. Took maybe 48 hours before I noticed significant activity in the starter. Put in the fridge Friday, pitched Sat night, and good activity in the main batch within 12 hours...

I'm Getting Tired of this Winter

Exactly. And while the summers at their worst in MD will be sticky, it won't be 90°+ for most of 4 months... :D I have ran out here while kid of hot and muggy - not too bad. Different for sure.

Belgian Dubbel - can I get a critique?

This is assuming my relatively low efficiency of about 57% (no sparge brewer): (Belgian) Pils Malt 12.375 lb Munich Malt 2.625 lb Caramunich 1.75 lb Special B 0.875 lb Dark Candi Sugar 1 lb Styrian Goldings 1.5 oz (60 min) WLP 500 Planning on dough-in at 104° for 20...

I'm Getting Tired of this Winter

Moved to MD from Tucson AZ in January - most of my life has been in AZ. Trying to remember how grumpy the AZ summers make me (grumpier every year since I took up running)...what gets me is the variation in a single week - from 40° to 15° back to 27°, etc.

    Extract versus all grain?

I went to AG about a year and a half ago - no sparge, plastic cooler, copper manifold. I'll say I've loved all of my AG beers. My extract beers - some had a taste I associate with extract - don't know how to describe it. Not all, but some. But all of my AG beers just seem to have more and...

    Dogfish 120

Bought a couple bottles when visiting the in-laws at Fenwick Island. Bought a bottle for my father- and brother-in-law. Threw the bottles in the fridge to chill a bit. 2 min later, my sister-in-law cracks one open - not knowing what it was..."It's ok...I guess...it's a little warm..."

Going to San Diego for a week

Coronado is good - their restaurant on Coronado island is good, but I really liked the brewery itself on the mainland.

Road trip from Austin to DC

Not a brewery, but a nice dive bar in Roanoke - great burgers and bottled beer selection - Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint 210 Market Street Southeast Roanoke, VA 24011 Drove from Tucson to Columbia MD last week (new job in MD, staying in Columbia till closing on the house in Eldersburg), and...

critique my peanut butter stout recipe

Good thinking - did a choco-pb porter last year, (two jars of PB2, some lactose, some cocoa powder and nibs) and didn't have much head retention at all - oils somewhere might have knocked it back, so oats might be a good boost - will have to remember that. The PB2 worked well enough - more for...

    Moving to MD!

Hello Marylanders, Just recently accepted a great job at JHUAPL, start Jan 26th! Seems like the homebrew and craft beer scene is pretty good out there. Wondering if I could inquire as to some of the areas to live. I had it in mind to look towards Just E of Rockville, say, to the E of Rock...

What do you do with your spent grains?

Here (Tucson), it's quail. Pitch the grains over the wall (no one behind me), usually the quail are there the next day. Grains gone in three days.

Do you mention your homebrewing hobby in job interviews

I'd be careful too - maybe not with HR, but if the hobbies come up with potential future peers during the interview...esp. if the interview is more "we know you can do the job, but want to see if you're a good fit with our crew", then why not. It did come up in my last interview - the likely...
