    Blichman brew pots

I've been thinking of a Blichmann pot purchase. I currently brew 5 gallon but I've always felt I should buy one size larger to allow for growth. In the 15 gallon size - can I still brew 5 or does the wort level not reach the Brewmometer?

    Advantages/disadvantages of a cooler mash/lauter tun

If you decide to go with a round cooler set up - the cheapest I've found them is Home Depot. I got mine for 47 IIRC last year. With a veteran's discount I was in the 44 dollar range - out the door and large enough to go to 10 gallon brews.

    "Interesting"-fire marshall

Invite the fire marshal over. Never saw a downside to being friendly with the local firemen or police officers. Particularly when there's trouble.

    Brewery names--what's your story?

Teal's Brewery I spent a lot of time trying to come up with some catchy name/phrase. Then I realized that all of the really old school, great breweries were all family names that lasted generations. So that's what I went with.

OG and necessity of yeast starter

"Great beer" or "good beer" can be rather subjective to one another's palate. I've not made a ton of beer but I will admit to making bad beer. I would ask this - has anyone ever tried someone's brew and without recipe and process discussion said "This beer was made with an underpitched...

    Old recipes and ingredients

Been reading a lot on Shut Up About Barclay Perkins. Love the blog and have been thinking I'd like to give some of their old recipes a go. Couple of questions. 1. Often the recipe mentions "Invert Sugar 2" or "Invert Sugar 1" I don't know what that is - any idea? 2. Lots of those...

How much beer should I have at my wedding reception?

Yeah - I hadn't planned on that much booze, brother did. He had open bar for the first hour too so people round here drink. Course we both had our receptions at hotels so many spent the night. Easier to drink to excess when there's zero DUI worry.

How much beer should I have at my wedding reception?

Depends on if you're from WI or not. I went through 5 1/2 barrels with a reception of about 100 people. My brother went through 11 1/2 barrels with 200 people.

How to label faucets when you have 8 beers on tap?

I don't know - how often will you have guests who's normal method of reading is right to left like Arabic? Not meant to be snarky, really isn't but if I see a sign that said #5 Brown Eyed Ale - I easily mentally count 5 from the left and pull a pint. If I've been drinking to a point where I can...

    4 Liter Starter?

When you do the calc on Mr. Malty - it offers a chance to change the way you do the starter. With a simple starter - yeah over 4L but choosing "stir plate" - that drops it to 1.73 L Might be much more doable for you. (I've not done starters with mine but will - just learning myself)

    Northern Brewer

All - Because I am not one person to only complain, I wanted to share. I order 99% of my stuff from Northern Brewer. I love Brewing TV, love their kits and their gear has been top notch. Recently ordered a mix of stuff and one of them was a sweatshirt. Invoice and packing list...

my local water hole has...no education.

I agree - for me, I think the draw is it's kind of a merit badge for a beer geek. I know it's not really worth anything to my bottom line per say but it does look pretty on the mantle.

my local water hole has...no education.

Leads me to ask - what value, if any, do you all place on the cicerone program? Particularly at the lower levels? I took the little sample exam, smoked it which makes me wonder if it's worth taking the exam to be a "Certified Beer Server". As much as I'd also love to move on and get the...
