    2124 Bohemian Lager question.

Despite the name, word is wyeast 2124 actually is a German strain. I've brewed several lagers with it and they turned out great!

    new to biab equipment question

One more comment on water, you can try filtered tap with a half a campden tablet (to knock out any chlorine or chloramines), but the bulk water dispensers in parking lots and grocery stores actually work well. I get reverse osmosis filtered water from a watermill express in the parking lot at...

    Forgot to rinse PBW

I agree. If it's just whatever was on the paddle without rinsing, I say let it finish then see, by then you probably won't notice. Fresh wort after the boil always tastes harsh before it ferments, so don't worry about that.

    new to biab equipment question

Welcome to BIAB! A mill isn't necessary if you can buy grains milled, I don't have one. Others swear by having a mill to have more control on how fine the grain is milled, but I wouldn't say that is absolutely necessary if you're starting out. The bag should keep the grains off the bottom, but...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I'll add my two cents, before I kegged I bottled some lagers, and followed a similar process the others posted. I fermented as usual, bottled after a cold crash, left them at room temp a couple weeks to carb up, then just kept them in the fridge. From what I read at the time it's fine to lager...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

Turns out nothing to be worried about, it's cranking along nicely now. When pitching from slurries of other strains they start pretty quick, but M54 for me has its own timeline!

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I repitched a slurry of MJ54 from a prior batch yesterday. It was slow to start when I first used it as a dry yeast. Do people have the same experience from slurry? I’m wondering at what point to give up on it and repitch a fresh pack.

    Cheapest path to electric

Thanks, sounded too good to be true. I thought of the bucket heaters, it looks like they have 1500w now, but the one I saw on Amazon has a shutoff to prevent boiling. That and they won't be on the bottom.

    Cheapest path to electric

All right, so I'm interested in doing this, and cheaply. What about rigging up two of these (or something like them) from separate GFCI outlets on separate breakers? Other than that and keeping the plastic parts out of the water or wort, any issues? I suppose you could use a router controller...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I'm with you, except with 2 kegs. One usually has cider, the other usually a light one - right now a warm fermented schwarzbier, had a leichtbier, a vienna saaz smash, next something pilsner-ish. Schwarzbier with MJ54 is freaking awesome.

AMCYL Kettle GIVEAWAY + Homebrew Supply's Black Friday | Cyber Monday Weekend Deals

I’m thankful for my cousin’s advice that got me into home brewing. He said “if you can bake a cake, you can make beer.”

I figured I’d do the same, what’s weird is the thin layer of foam/bubbles that stayed for a week and a half after the krausen dropped. This is my first time using MJ54, didn’t know if others had seen that. Anyway, most is gone now and it’s starting to clear.

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

How long do you folks see Mangrove Jacks California Lager yeast take? I brewed a Schwartzbier a couple of weeks ago OG was 1.049, pitched a hydrated pack of MJ54, fermented at 68 for a week then 72. It had a huge krausen that dropped, but bubbles still remain on the surface and an occasional...

    Counter Flow Chiller Needs

One note I'll add, I have the same hot groundwater issue here in Houston, and I haven't seen any posts in this thread about pumping ice-water through the chiller. I use an IC, when I bought it I used a pre-chiller and it took forever. Now I use a harbor freight pond pump to recirculate ice...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

You just need a second kettle (or large bucket I suppose). I mashed the first beer in a keggle with a ball valve, drained the wort to an 8 gallon kettle to boil the first beer, then added about 6 gallons of water to the grain in the keggle for the second runnings, and boiled after the first was...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I did this recently, also with a dopplebock and fermented with K-97. It’s pretty good, though it is super cloudy and won’t clear. I have to admit the partigyle is more work than it sounds.
