    Plato coincidences

So, this may be a stupid question but here it goes... I just read the gravity of my latest batch... 1.026 (6.5 plato) from the reading two days ago 1.057 (14.25 plato) and beertools says that I am about at 4.0% abv.... so heres my question.... the change in degrees plato is about 8... the...

    First try at a Porter

I tried creating a Robust Porter today and had much success :ban: ! After sparging I was left with 10 gallons and an acceptable 75% efficiency... but... I wanted to see what would happen if I added 5 gallons to my mash tun and let it rest at 158dF until the first 10 gallons had gone into the...

    fermentation chamber for conical

so i guess my point was that maybe it would be cheaper to just get a different fermentation vessel and use the fridge as is...

    fermentation chamber for conical

how big is the conical??? I have a side by side also but i use a 15.5 sanke that i ferment in. So far all i have done is drilled holes in the center section to allow the temperature to equalize between both sides. I still have room above the keg for a carboy and a corny and on the freezer side i...

    Fermentation temp factors?

higher temps lead to the formation of esters (the fruity aromas, say in a belgian)... as well as off flavors. higher temps for a heffe with the right yeast will give you banna-y esters, which are liked by some people

    Chilling Wort in Arizona

I'm with schnitzengiggle, I use 100ft of hose and then put 25 lbs of ice on top of that and enough water to cover the ice. I also put rock salt in to lower the temp as low as possible. I think last time I had the water to -8C. I run that through an IC and stir the **** out of it. Hasn't taken...

    Screwing up my first batch

I'm no expert but I would seal the gap as best as possible and as soon as possible. You are increasing the oxygen content of the system and the fermentation portion of the yeast life cycle is an an-aerobic event (one without oxygen). What is happening now, is you are increasing the chances of...

    My new 3-tier brew stand

Because I am short and I don't want to lift things any higher than I have too. The top ring is only like 3-4 inches tall but in total it takes 8 inches off the total height of the brew stand which is definitely awesome for the short guys.

First time in the new corny

NEW, to me :) I still haven't finished the fridge... actually I have barely started but the beer is carbonating away I plan on fermenting in the corny as well... but when i transfer isn't it going to grab all the trub at the bottom and transfer that as well?

    My new 3-tier brew stand

do you direct fire the mash??? does that lead to scorching? I wanted too the first time I brewed on the stand but I was afraid of the scorching factor

    My new 3-tier brew stand

I used 1/4' angle iron on the whole stand. Both the top and the mid section have the angle iron welded to make a groove for the burner. It was part of an old camping stove that had two burners... so i cut it down the middle and my friend welded handles on either side. You can take/replace the...

    My new 3-tier brew stand

salmonhouse - I haven't had a problem with the plasma cutter leaving anything behind but we did clean up the cuts on the kettles. I was thinking about making them all nice and shiny but thats another project for another day. I have a friend help me lift the boil kettle to the mid position to...

    My new 3-tier brew stand

-sanch Az brewers unite! The no pump situation might not last that long after all. I want to eventually get a full RIMS setup going but for now this is perfect. I did get a low temperature pump donated from a friend and I am going to mount it and use it for recirculating (salted) ice water...
