    Split fridge into a fermetor/kegorator?

mikeal, why didn't I see that thread before?!?!?! Actually, I think I did, but I didn't want to buy two temp controllers and I had ample time to hack away at the mid-section. Do you have problems with the fridge being able to keep up?? Maybe my compressor is acting up but when I try to keep it...

    Split fridge into a fermetor/kegorator?

I looked this up and have even tried this myself... Personally and from my experience, fermenting and keeping a keg really cold for serving just isn't possible. Most fridges only have one pump, that pump cools the freezer side. The fridge side then lets cold air in from the freezer side via a...

Apparently my original pictures were deleted... oops. Heres a recap. As a kegerator/fermenter Taking down the wall Temp controller installed and foaming has begun... More to come, just have to stop brewing so I can work on the fermentation chamber

    Define. Starter. Not. Amplification.

Good info gentlemen. I'm glad to see there are differing ideas on how to go about this. As well as some info to back up some of the arguments! Cheers

    Define. Starter. Not. Amplification.

Ok. Question. Ready. Here we go... The idea of a starter is to pitch yeast that is actively fermenting, i.e. during the stationary/fermentation part of the life cycle, right? Doing so allows the yeast to multiply and metabolize all the available oxygen during the log phase. Which leads into...

Grainbill = the quantity of grains you used to brew your beer (and or any malt extracts used). This lets us know the potential of your beer in the first place. Say you used a bunch of non fermentables, 1.020 is as far as it might be able to go

Here is a link to Mr. Malty. It is a pitching rate calculator from Jamil of the brewing network... which I would check out if you like to hear people talk about beer, I highly recommend these drunk guys :) The pitching rate calculator has a few different setting so you can choose the one most...

mis-information? No. Differing of ideas maybe. For the record there will be zero oxidation to your starters, ever... starters produce CO2 which creates a blanket between the starter and the environment... even with a piece of foil for a cap the O2 will not be able to penetrate the CO2 layer due...

    belgian wit stuck fermentation

You're not really making a starter... you're pitching a higher volume of yeast than you started with. Which will ferment faster than the original amount, but you still are having to go back through the life cycle. Think of it this way... You are fighting a war and the yeast are your soldiers...

and that works fine to increase the number of yeast cells in solution, but if you would like to increase fermentation rate, it is better to add yeast that has already started fermentation and is still fermenting when you pitch. There are four main stages in a yeast life cycle, lag, log...

You cold crashed a starter??? Why would anyone do that? IMO, the goal of a starter is, one - to take a small amount of yeast and amplify them to a higher quantity and two - to introduce that now higher quantity of yeast in an active state and not a dormant state. When you crash cool, you kill...

    keggle questions

a pickup tube get any liquid lower than the level of your ball valve... you dont need one if you dont mind wasting a gallon or two every brewday... I personally whirlpool after flameout, to collect proteins (as well as hop debris) in the middle of the keggle. Hops wont hurt your beer in the...

    Black IPA

WORST IDEA EVER!!! Not to be rude in any way, shape or form, but damn, I do not like Black IPA's... A porter should be a porter and an IPA should be an IPA. Isn't brewing a great beer about balance?!?!?! No balance in a black IPA. sorry to rant just had to throw it out there. By the way I...

i like the preboil gravity in there :) Maybe an automatic calculator for those who use a refractometer... since alcohol disrupts the reading a calculation is needed... I dont know it, but beer tools does... My idea was kind of how beer tools is setup... you enter the ambient temperature...

After 3 weeks of waiting, did I just kill my beer while racking?

your beer is fine... drink away... unless the little bit of water that fell in is full of life threatening bacteria that causes explosive diarrhea... other than that congrats on a finished brew and don't worry about it

Just me personally but if you could be able to calibrate your system in the tools section (btu's of burner/ heat capacity of BK-HLT-MT) and set your strike temp based on that info, that would be sweet.... Mash Timer with both visual and audible alerts... Boil timer with different alarms...
