i like a bud or a pbr now and then... but ever since i turned 30 that stuff is a guaranteed headache the next day. i'm talking about having one beer and waking up with a hangover.

    Organic Yeast

i've wondered this myself... i use organic hops & malt whenever i can... so why not yeast? here's what i think: just because Whitelabs/Wyeast aren't officially labeled organic it doesn't mean they're not organic. like you said, yeast isn't a crop that's "grown" in the conventional sense so...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Made a 5 gal batch 4 days ago & followed the original recipe exactly. Crazy nonstop fermentation activity from the 1st day... One tip... don't worry about the smell! My girlfriend hated the odor (and she's normally not one to complain about my brewing stuff) and I was at the point where I was...

    Cockroaches Anyone?

i have a stack of old Mother Earth News back issues from the 70's... i remember reading that roaches detest cucumbers of all things. cucumber peelings scattered around the places you've seen roaches is supposed to do the trick.

well... it's a bit different with beer mostly because your grain needs to be malted first. but you definitely could buy grain and try malting it at home. check out these youtube vids for a quick look at what that entails...

awesome, creamygoodness. i've just been using my stovetop and 2 6qt pots to brew in. sparging is a pain as is keeping a constant mash temp over the course of an hour... but i do it! i've gotten really high efficiency every time. i tend to make higher gravity beers since i'm only getting a...

alright, i couldn't resist! i made a mini 1 gal batch last night and separated into 2 jugs to do a little yeast experiment (dry vs liquid)... and i decided to go condom on one of them. the first pic is just after pitching... the second one is 6 hrs later. look at that thing go!

    Why 5 gallon batches?

i second that. i live in a tiny apt with a super small kitchen. i've been doing all-grain 1 gallon batches on the stovetop... works out just great and i'm learning a lot. BUT.... next batch i do is gonna be 5 gallons for sure. it's the same amount of work really. i'm tired of sweating my balls...

    earthenware fermentation vessels...

Has anyone ever used anything other than the typical carboy/bucket to ferment a batch of beer? these german made pickling crocks look pretty cool... they have a gutter around the rim that you fill with water to make nature's perfect airlock...

I just got my first shipment since joining Valley Malt's MOTMC. 50lb sack of organic pilsner malt and some smaller bags of honey & light crystal malts. My brother & I did a 5 gal batch of saison last weekend and used my new Victoria to mill 12 lbs of the pilsner... i messed up the milling and...

    New Malt Supplier

I'm surprised there hasn't been any discussion on these boards about Valley Malt in Western Mass. I just received my 1st shipment from their "malt-of-the-month-club" which looks like 50lb of organic pilsner malt, 1lb honey malt, and 6.25 lb light crystal. I'm looking forward to brewing this...
