Irish Red / US-05 / Maris Otter violent fermentation

Just curious if anyone has had a similar experience with US-05 and Maris Otter. Brewed an Irish Red last week, basically following Jamil's recipe from BCS. 11.25 lbs. of Maris Otter, 6 oz. each of roasted barley, crystal 40 and crystal 120. Came out high on my OG (1.064), so I pitched 2 packs...

Unfused 14 AWG for switches and LEDs?

Makes sense. Didn't we drop the requirement in the US to fuse plugs?

Unfused 14 AWG for switches and LEDs?

Any other thoughts on this? Standards or codes that apply to control wiring? So far I've laid out my wiring without internal fuses, other than the PID and pump. Similar to voltin, johnodon, etc, a la PJ's diagrams, but with a main power switch vs. an E-stop.

    Biab efficiency

Did this the other day at my LHBS and it bound up the mill and backed up the line for 30 mins! I've done it several times before with the same mill with no issues, so I'm not sure what the problem was. FWIW I was crushing about 6 lbs of Maris Otter when it got stuck. Previous double-crushes...

Unfused 14 AWG for switches and LEDs?

Typically, yes. Take a look at Kal's main power switch here: http://theelectricbrewery.com/control-panel-part-2?page=7 The switch is wired with 14 AWG wire connected to the 10 AWG main feed to the contactor from the 30A 240V inlet. I'm not worried about the typical load these switches and...

Unfused 14 AWG for switches and LEDs?

In planning my eBIAB build I've been checking out all the wiring diagrams I can find. I keep coming across diagrams and photos of 14 AWG directly connected to 10 AWG and run to various switches, LEDs, and alarms. My understanding is that anytime you drop in conductor size, you need...

    Contactor wiring

Thanks for the info guys. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious. So ring or fork type terminals for the line and load, and spade (blade? quick disconnect?) type for the coil.

    Contactor wiring

Please forgive me for the possibly dumb question, but my wiring experience so far has been limited to the occasional outlet or light fixture. I am using 120v coil/240v 30a contactors from Auber (here) connected to my main power and element switches. The actual switch side is obvious, but it...

eBIAB controller & pump, in a toolbox - questions

I'm starting to collect the parts for my eBIAB system and had a couple of questions. Here are the specs: 240V, 30A via a spa panel connected to a dryer outlet -1 PID/SSR, 1 5500W element -4 switches: - mushroom button - main power (using a contactor, not resistors) - Alarm -...

TIG welder needed in MD near DC

Looking for someone to weld on a 1 1/2" tri clover fitting in the DC/MD/VA area. Tried a search, but only came up with hits from a couple of years ago. If you know a good welder (or are one!), I could use some help. tjash

Making a tri clamp element adapter weldless?

That just in from Brewers Hardware. VERY fast reply - great service from those guys! I sent a note to their general product inquiry link at the same time I posted the message above. Confirms some of my worries. Might work with a couple of locknuts on the outside to provide something to...

Making a tri clamp element adapter weldless?

Anyone ever try to make one of the Brewers Hardware 1/1.5" triclamp element adapters (here) weldless by using a tri-clamp to male NPT fitting (here)? Pass the threads through a hole in the kettle, seal it up with a 1.5" locknut and silicone washer; maybe one on either side. Basically, a bigazz...

12/3 L5-15 extension cord safe for 20a service?

Thanks for the info. After more thought, I've gone back to my original plan of a single element on a 240v system. Simpler, more power, and less hassle with only one power source to worry about.

    $46 spa panel on ebay

Starting to collect components for my build. Found this on ebay and bought 1 of 2. Thought someone else here might be interested in snagging the other. Open box, but the seller claims it is new. Will post here once it is delivered to confirm.

    Mitch's Electric Brewery Build

I'm pretty sure mashing children will not yield a BJCP-approved style! Seriously though - great looking stand, and nice hardware. I look forward to following your build and seeing the final product.

12/3 L5-15 extension cord safe for 20a service?

I plan to run 2 2000W elements of two circuits, both of which have outside outlets. One is a T-blade style L5-20, but the other is a standard household L5-15. They're definitely on separate circuits and both definitely have 20A breakers in the main panel. Any issue using a run-of-the-mill...

    Help/suggestions for a 110v eBIAB/Smoker combo controller

So, I've been trolling the Electric Brewing forum for the last month or so contemplating various builds and have really enjoyed seeing all the different approaches people have taken. I feel fairly confident that I could make do with some of the wiring diagrams P-J and others have put out there...

    My BIAB, RIMS, E-Brewery-In-A-Can

Great build and great thread - thanks for compiling all this info! I have the same Bayou Classic 44 qt kettle and thought I would be limited to 3500W due to the kettle diameter (13.5" internal), but you've inspired me. Did you have any issues at all fitting the 5500W element? What kind of...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

What I've found in my searching is that most people recommend 2x your batch size. I have only done one BIAB (no-sparge), and a 44 qt Bayou Classic with a steamer basket worked well for my 5.5 gallon batch. I actually ended up with extra wort, but that was due to having to cut my boil short...

    Dunkles Weissbier Dunkelweizen

Planning to brew this up this weekend, but would like to darken it a bit, within guidelines. Maybe closer to 20-22 SRM. What would you recommend I change to accomplish that? Use a darker crystal? Crystal 60 maybe? Or would that impact the flavor too much? Any tips would be appreciated! I...
