    Uses for used grain?

We make bread every now and again, and used to give it away to friends with chickens. We got six hens a few weeks ago, so all the spent grains will get used here now.

    Jamil's cream ale

Just picked up some more pilsner, flaked corn, and liberty hops to brew another five gallons. I already have the 2 row and yeast on hand. I didn't find this to be anything like a BMC. Sure, it's an easy drinking summer beer, but I thought it was much better than BMC.

    Jamil's cream ale

Sorry, should have said one lb of flaked corn.

    Jamil's cream ale

I brewed this about five weeks ago...all grain. Three weeks in primary, and two in the bottle so far. Got some ribs and chicken on the smoker, and have had about six of these so far. My only complaint is that I didn't make another five gallons the next week. This stuff is darn good! Happy...

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

Probably too late....but no need to flip the ribs. Baby backs and chicken leg quarters on the drum right now.

British Yeasts, Fermentation Temps and Profiles, CYBI, Other Thoughts...

I bottled a Southern English Nut Brown a few weeks ago...used 1968. I was a bit concerned... cause right after I pitched it, I found this thread. But, the couple of bottles I have opened have been just fine.

    Warm fermentation solutions??

Yes....just a simple lighting dimmer installed in a 4" square box with a receptacle installed in the same box. Add a power cord, and you're all set. While you do have to manually adjust it every now and then, it worked pretty well.

    Warm fermentation solutions??

I used a fermwrap all winter with just a simple dimmer. Kept my temps pretty much right around 64°.

Can I wait to wash my yeast?

    Thanks guys

Can I wait to wash my yeast?

I just finished bottling a cream ale that I used 1056 on. I don't really feel like washing yeast tonight, but I would like to give it a try. Can I move the sealed fermenter to a cool spot, and harvest the yeast in a day or two? There is still some beer covering the cake.

What's an accurate evaporation rate for the hour long boil?

I boil off almost 2 gallons in an hour. I figure on almost 8 gallons into kettle, 6 after the boil, 5.5 into fermenter, and 5 into bottling bucket.

    Trub and loss!

My last5-6 brews have been out of Jamil & Palmers book. Those are 6 gallon batches, meaning he shoots for 6 gallons at the end of the boil. I need almost 8 gallons pre boil to get six after the boil. I then cool the wort and let it sit in the kettle for awhile to settle. I transfer 5.5 gallons...

    Barley Crusher or Crankandstein?

I own a C&S 2S mill. I couldn't be happier with it. I ended up going the C&S because of plywood base versus the MDF on the BC. And, my LHBS has one, and has milled a lot of grain with it...no problems. I have left the gap as it came....which is about .040". I regularly get 77-82% efficiency...

    Hydrometer reading changes over time

I like this answer! Thanks guys....since it's reading correctly in water, I'll just test quickly and get rid of the sample! I'll do one last FG check on that brown ale before I bottle it tonight....won't make the mistake of leaving the hydro in there. I'm betting it was sticking to the...

    Hydrometer reading changes over time

Temp remained the same(room temp at approx 67°). In fact, after I pulled the hyd out of the water sample today, I put it back in, and it's reading 1.000 again. I'm going to leave it in for awhile and see if it still happens. I don't usually leave it in the sample for such an extended period...

    Hydrometer reading changes over time

I checked my FG on a Nut Brown Ale a couple of days ago. When I initially checked it, the FG was 1.016(supposed to be at 1.013...I missed a bit) I let the hydrometer sit in the beer(in sample tube) for a few hours, when I checked it again, the reading was 1.020. I decided to check it with...

    BeerSmith 2.0

Really looking forward to this release. The tabbed browsing will be nice. I bought my copy a few months ago...BS has been a huge help to me!

National HombrewDay, what are you brewing?

I hope to brew either a smoked porter, or a chocolate hazelnut porter.

    Starting Equipment

The list looks pretty good. Try and get a big pot if possible. I started with an 8.5 gallon pot, but really needed extra room. I ended up with a 10 gallon to boil in, and use the other one as a hlt. Good luck with the brew.
