Why not just start with all grain?

I started all grain brewing my second batch--in 1992! That was without youtube videos, DVDs, or podcasts or an internet to learn from. My only resource was a copy of Papazian's book. Before brewing at all I attended a 2 session homebrewing class at a local health food store that sold...

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

I went an Ace hardware store and looked through the multi-drawer box containing O-rings to find the #124 ones. At first it didn't appear they had any but persistence paid off. Amazon has them for a buck apiece if you buy 10...

BIAB - Single Crush, Double Crush, Squeeze, No-squeeze Efficiencies

What is the mechanism in a mashout that enhances foam stability? I am not seeing how 15 minutes at 170ish preboil would have that result.

    Tilt calibration problem

Good idea. I will try a new battery but I just put a new one in about 6 months ago and the previous one had lasted two years.

    Tilt calibration problem

Two brews ago I calibrated my Tilt hydrometer in water using TiltPi interface because it seemed off. There was a .032 difference between the uncalibrated SG (1.032) and the calibrated water SG (1.000). After that on my next to last brew in July the OG seemed accurate as it was within a couple...

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

Update! I bought 3 new O-rings (size 124) at my local Ace Hardware for about a buck each and put them all on one of the rollers, then reassembled the mill. It only had 1 O-ring originally but I figured I would add some fault tolerance by using all 3 of them. I didn't replace the bushings as...

What BIAB brewing actually is (Mythbusting for traditionalists)

IMO BIAB Mythbusters should be sticky thread. When Alabama finally legalized homebrewing in 2013 I decided to celebrate by building a nice 3 vessel natural gas powered, PID controlled, HERMS system (and a keezer). I have used it for many years but a few years ago I decided to give BIAB a try...

    Beer to wine

I use a plastic bucket fermenter I already had for primary and existing better bottle for secondary. You can keg wine but I like bottles so you'll need them and a corker/corks. I bought a cheap degassing attachment for my drill but use a bottling wand I had so all in I invested about $60 in...

How much do you oxygenate wort?

I Chugger pump my wort through a DIY venturi tube into my 60L Speidel fermenter, adding dry yeast about 1/2 way though the transfer and typically end up with about 4-6" of foam on top of the wort in a 10 gallon batch. Based on Tilt data, fermentation is always well underway in 6 to 12 hours.

Some Tilt fermentation data for different dry yeasts

My current brew with the Saflager 34/70 is either stuck at 1.021 or my Tilt is wonky, hopefully the latter since I can recalibrate the Tilt. Edit: I took a manual hydrometer reading and got 1.020, the same reading the Tilt is showing. So my Tilt appears to be accurate but my FG is higher than...

SG reading from tilt and refractometer

My Tilt was way off a few batches ago but I calibrated in water and it has been only one point different from my manual hydrometer reading of original gravity for the last three brews. I use a RaspberryPi running TiltPi and the web interface shows both the uncalibrated and calibrated gravities...

Some Tilt fermentation data for different dry yeasts

My Tilt Bluetooth hydrometer saves readings to a csv log file on a RPi running Tiltpi and I thought it might be interesting to see a cumulative chart of my last 3 10-gallon fermentations. The 34/70 was brewed Sunday so it has a ways to go but, behold for your amusement: FWIW, the 34/70 is in a...

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

How's this for a homebrewing throwback video? I would guess late-80s/early 90s based on the computer I saw in it. Jack even malts grain at home.

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

Good stuff thanks for the link. I found out about Jack and his products on HBD. It took a bit of digging just now but I found my first HBD post from March 30, 1993 from when I was in grad school. A lot of beer has passed under that bridge...

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

I want to update that I did get a reply from Jack Schmidling yesterday in which he explained about his factory fire and permanent closure. He included some facts related to rebuilding a Maltmill which I though I'd pass on: The oring is a #124 available at most hardware stores. You can...

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

So just hammer them out to replace them? EDIT: Thanks for all the input, I'm buying a cereal killer. I got 20+ years from the Maltmill but futzing with these sleeve bushings isn't worth my time. Thanks for the good times Jack.

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

I took my Maltmill apart and unless I'm crazy it doesn't appear to have bushings or bearings. The, what appear to me to be, bronze sleeves that the roller ends go in don't move at all and don't appear to be replaceable. What am I missing?

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

That wasn't my experience. I think I need to deep clean the rollers if it is ever going to crush again.

Want to repair a Schmedling unadjustable Maltmill

Thanks for all the feedback. Without the o-ring on mine the other roller absolutely doesn't turn which means the grain doesn't get crushed. Perhaps the other roller is too far gone if all of yours don't require the o-ring. I emailed jack but no reply and his website doesn't look like its been...
