    Straining into Bottling Bucket?

That chair spent many years out on a homestead in the middle of South Dakota. I would imagine you are right in all the things it has seen....including the raccoon in the kitchen. I had both rubber washers and I did hand tighten it, but I'm guessing I didn't get it tight enough (with the leaking...

    New Brewer Yeast Mistake

Aaah, didn't even think about that. Well, truth be told, I didn't think about that because I didn't know about that. Thanks. For some reason, I'm really starting to feel like I should wait 3 weeks with my bottles at 70 degrees. Not quite sure why..... The 1 Week was just what the guy at...

Rookie Stupid Mistake - Can it be saved?

    Thank you kindly.

Rookie Stupid Mistake - Can it be saved?

Thanks for the response. I thought the raisins were the nutrient, like in Joe's Ancient Orange Mead (at least that's what I thought they were for). I did buy some Wyeast Nutrient. I can put some in there. I see posts where people add them on a schedule. For a 1 gallon batch, do you have any...

Rookie Stupid Mistake - Can it be saved?

Hey Folks, I made my first mead, a batch of JAOM, earlier this week, no problem. Nice activity but nothing crazy. Today I made a strawberry mead using old clover honey , K1-V1116 yeast rehydrated, 1 pound of strawberries that had been frozen, smashed, defrosted, and introduced, and 18 raisins...

    New Brewer Yeast Mistake

Well, we bottled this today. Don't think we had any major screw-ups, although we forgot to put the sugar mix in the bucket before we started siphoning. Pretty sure we got it mixed in good enough, though. Smelled good, tasted great, and the ABV would seem to load out at 5.5% if I did the...

    Straining into Bottling Bucket?

Thanks for the responses. Just did it the normal way....sort of. First time bottling and there may have been a few mistakes along the way. The biggest being that we didn't put the sugar solution into the bottling bucket before we started siphoning. Pretty sure we got it mixed in properly, but...

    Straining into Bottling Bucket?

One quick question before I bottle my first batch today. If I put one of those 5 gallon mesh bags (sterilized, of course) into the bottling bucket to remove more sediment before bottling, will pulling the bag out agitate it enough to aerate it and harm the wort? Thanks.

    Jack's Apricot Vanilla Mead

I'm getting ready to throw this together and I had a question. The dried apricots I have (and all that I have found) contain 'sulfur dioxide and/or sodium bisulfite and/or potassium sorbate as preservatives'. Will this ruin the mead? It didn't specify anything in the recipe about avoiding...

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

Thanks for the info. I was guessing at the gravity so my number could be (and probably is) very wrong.

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I was reading through the thread and saw Ananimity's post about forgetting to get an OG reading. I forgot, too. I just took one and it seems high (although I guess I'm not sure what high is). My Hydrometer only goes to 1.07 and it was floating higher than that. If the lines were any indication...

    Mead Headspace

Good Afternoon Folks, I am going to be making a mead with fruit. Is it OK to make a 1 Gallon batch in a 2 gallon Fermentation bucket, or would that be too much headspace? I plan to rack it to glass after the fermentation slows down in a few weeks. Thanks.

How Much Yeast for a 1.5 Gallon Brew

Thanks for the wisdom. I'm looking forward to trying the next recipe with the shorter boil.

    Jack's Apricot Vanilla Mead

Will do. It's going in the bucket on Thursday when we bottle up my first attempt at brewing.

How Much Yeast for a 1.5 Gallon Brew

I bought tubing for a blow off hose today. Didn’t think I’d need it so fast. I will start with that from now on in the 2 Gallon bucket. Thanks.

How Much Yeast for a 1.5 Gallon Brew

This is what the airlock looked like. I’m sure you’ve all seen this many times, but it’s uncharted territory for me...

How Much Yeast for a 1.5 Gallon Brew

Update - We put this in a 2 gallon bucket Thursday afternoon. At 2:00AM Sunday morning, I went down to look at it and my airlock was taking on overflow and a little bit had leaked out onto the lid. I would have thought that 1/2 gallon's worth of head space would have been enough, but then again...

    Dry Hop Question

The Chinook is still presenting a slower, yet steady, bubble. I'm thinking that the trub was fairly disturbed as we put the hops in a stainless steel tea diffuser. I'm guessing it dropped down like a depth charge and got those yeast dudes agitated. One question about that would be if it's still...

    Jack's Apricot Vanilla Mead

Thank you, AkTom. That sounds perfect just the way you do it.
