    Lager starter

Ive been reading, and just want to verify: the only difference between an ale starter and a lager starter is size, correct? No different procedures or ingredients? Gonna brew my first lager soon and wanna get it right

    Mash temps

I have read the cream of 3 crops recipe, and one day will brew it. I am trying to use up the rest of my bulk grain(so I can buy more!). Thanks for all the input, but I am a bit surprised no one mentioned anything about the honey! After plugging this into beer alchemy I adjusted a bit to be...

    Mash temps

I'm converting an extract recipe to all grain, just wondering what the mash temp should be. Cream ale 5 gallons 9# Pilsen 1# honey malt .5# Belgian cara 45 1oz cluster @ 60 minutes Wyeast 1056 American ale I'm thinking about making it a honey-ginger beer, or maybe citrus ginger. I'd like...

    Full Boil Question

You would keep the grain and extract the same. Just add no extra water. The purpose of the partial boil is to accommodate a smaller boil pot. In theory, you would decrease the hops, because you would get better utilization of them, but why use less when you can use more? They are hops after all!!

    strawberry harvest clone

Are you expecting more fermentation? How much yeast could possibly be left? Did you need to account for berry fermentation when measuring your fg from primary?

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

I can't find it anymore, but I believe that Midwestsupplies.com had Bad Advice for $1.00. That's MUCH cheaper than the currently discounted price for a 1 yr membership. Thank beer god for the world's largest brewing community

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

Mash at 150 for 60 minutes Mashout at 170 for 10 minutes The 1.36 is the volume of the grain, and 4.25 is the actual strike water.

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

But for a 60 minutes boil, in a 7 gallon kettle, max preboil is 7. Which is 1.4 gallons sparge.

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

Thanks! I used my calculator, tried yours, and even did good ol’ math. Yes, my initial mash will be 5.61 gallons The next step in my mash schedule is to mashout at 170degF for ten minutes. To accomplish this, I add to my mash, which increases the total volume to Now...

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

    Here's my calculations: 17lb grain bill, mash at 1qt/lb (1.36 gal) Strike = 4.25 gallons @ 168degF Mashout = 2.46 gal @ 212degF to 170degF Total in tun = 8.06 gallons (which is a 10 gallon gatorade cooler) preboil volume = 6.5 gallons 8.06 - .325 (deadspace) - 2.125(absorption) = 5.61 into...

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

I typically use boiling water for my infusions, but to move 5 gallons and 17 lbs 20 degrees, it's over 4 gallons of boiling water. If do use decoction, how will that affect my end product? Is it merely a choice, like batch vs fly sparging? A club member told me that for decoction you remove...

Big beer with 10 gal mash tun

My next batch is a IIPA, with a 17 lb grain bill. I've done the calculations, and if I use a 1:1 ratio, after the infusion, my mash tun will be full, and I will need only a 1 gallon sparge. If I bump it up to 1.1 gal/lb I will have absolutely NO room for correction if I don't hit my temps, and...

Very proud of my SWMBO today!

Great for her and you! Mine barely drinks beer. Sometimes I wish she would be more interested, but then I remember what it's like to cook with her. We are both chefs, but apparently there's only one way to do it- hers. I like my alone time. Hope she enjoys her brew!

How many kegs do you own?

I have five 5gal kegs. My fridge holds 3+co2, or 4 without. currently only one is filled, but about to take that up to 4 Thursday. I'm still using picnic taps on all of them.
