You know you're a home brewer when?

When you are more concerned with when the courier will deliver the hops you ordered, as that might affect brewday, than you are with the fact that the power will be off for scheduled maintenince.

    Anyone completely self sufficient?

I'm at about 90% self sufficient. I bottle as CO2 is a bit of an effort to get where I am, so when I'm low on bottles I buy beer for the bottles.

    Show us your home brewery/brewspace

My brewing vessels are standard kitchen pots (some just huge), most of my fermentation in the summer is in my brew closet. I winter my outdoor storeroom turns in a brewery and many gallons of beer is fermented.

    Thoughts for why low OG

Might be they are using different company for their malt. Here in South Africa if you use local malt one company vs another could reduce up to 5% effiency. So if all else in your process remains the same I would guess the malt is not as didastic as the malt your previous LHBS had...

    home malting?

I am curious how many people make their own malt and why? I started for the simple reason, I live in a rural part of South Africa, we do have fantastic malt in the country, but my base malt triples in cost when shipping is added to the total. literally it cost 299 for 50lb and 800 for shipping...

    Quart brewing

I recently read a post on practical selfreliance, that explained how to brew a quart of mead or wine. The idea facinated me and I currently have a few wines and meads in quart fermenters. Now I want to try the same with beer, I can see how it might work for trying recipes and styles that would...

    Amber ale fail?

I also used US-05, no wheat or oats, 1/2 lb of rice was the only "strange" non barley malt in the mash. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a few weeks and cold crash.

    Amber ale fail?

Hi, I've been brewing for a while and have had a few beers that came out hazy, but never anything like this. After about ten days in primary I checked the possible FG 1.01 which is about what I was expecting, what I didn't expect was that it would look like mango juice... Anyone have an idea...
