    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Salt additions and lactic acid. A little goes a long way. For raising PH I was using baking soda, but next time I do a dark recipe, I and going to try pickling lime which can control the PH without adding NA to the recipe.

    Buying equipment to get started

You'll probably be doing it a year from now. The good thing is that with a group, each can contribute some $ and make a decent setup.

Help! I poured the wrong yeast, but took it out.

That's good to know when using some lower attenuating yeast like Windsor.

Help! I poured the wrong yeast, but took it out.

I guess you scooped out dry yeast, and replaced with the type you wanted?

    A beginner's fermentation woes...

It is pretty cool to see the activity. I do1 gallon batches exclusively and watching all that activity in the fermenter is pretty awesome.

    Wheat Beer Low Efficiency Question

Well today I did the same recipe again, but this time I milled the grains with my new cereal killer, set at .030 gap. I could see the difference in the crush vs when the store did it, and the smaller wheat grains are crushed vs no crush last time. And not suprisingly my efficiency jumped up to...

    Two Homebrew Stores, Two Efficiencies

Adventures in Homebrewing had a 15% discount over the weekend, for purchases > $49, so I took the plunge and ordered the cereal killer which came out to $85 delivered. It arrived yesterday, and its a pretty robust piece of equipment. In regards to milling at my LHBS, they don't charge and the...

    Wheat Beer Low Efficiency Question

That makes sense. I had them mill by recipe, so that makes sense as the grains were combined. They were very busy that day, and maybe the guy forgot to change the gap. Anyway, I'll run the next batch through my new mill before using.

    Two Homebrew Stores, Two Efficiencies

Similar issue. When I am in PA I buy from a LBHS in Bethlehem. Great place nice people. Otherwise I buy on Long Island, and again another nice place good people. But I am now noticing that I get better efficiency from the PA store, which makes me think they are more attentive to proper milling...

Where do you mill your grain?

My newly purchased mill will be used exclusively outside on the porch to avoid any dust inside the house, which would put my significant other over the top in regards to my brewing hobby. The DME comment is so true, that stuff gets everywhere and is ridiculously a PITA to use. I hope my improved...

    Wheat Beer Low Efficiency Question

I went to my LBHS this weekend to pickup ingredients for a small batch wheat beer. Simple recipe 50% Pilsner malt, 50% wheat malt, and some Saaz Hops. He asked Red or White?, and not knowing the difference I took one of each, so I can compare between the two. They milled the grain as they...

    Efficiency... Ugh

I assume that works because you do BIAB, correct? I just ordered a mill so I can by whole grains and hopefully improve my efficiency also. But I understand too fine of a grind can cause sparging problems for those doing batch sparging like me.

    1 gallon batch

I do gallon batches all the time, and typically start around 6-6.5 qts, and after boil end up around 5 qts or a little more. Your boil was way too high if you lost 5 quarts of water.

    Oxiclean...two years and no infections

That has been my cleaner from day 2. 34 batches later, I feel pretty confident in the results, and it is no rinse. This was a very interesting thread, emotions were a little high at times, but I learned alot from the discussion.
