Motorized Grain Mills: Time to show them off!

Couple of posts in this thread really helped me with inspiration, so I figured I'd return the favor. That's a lovejoy (spider) coupling into a 90° drill adapter which puts the center of mass close enough to the mill opening that a single bucket can hold the setup. That motor is the 107.5 rpm/30...

HELP: Down tube through Corny Keg Gas Post

Vent completely (just leave the pull tab in the up position if you have a vent). Work fast. Work in a bathtub (or put the keg in a sink or rubbermaid container). If it was beer I'd say keep a bottle of spray sanitizer handy, but I don't know if you need to worry about infecting kombucha.

    What happened to my pot?

If that is happening after a wort boil, it looks like beer stone (hydroxylapatite) which is a precipitate from calcium and phosphate. Could also be lime scale (hard water deposits, blame calcium again). If it's either of these, a hit with an acid cleaner should do the trick. StarSan should work...

Yeast Starter Calculations: Zainesheff Vs. Troester

I was following some of the stuff on the Woodland Brewing blog that dealt with lots of yeast growth and handling issues. He was doing scope counts and everything. I was impressed with his approach and the level of data he was presenting. I'm sad to see little/no activity there in quite some...

    What makes a good brewer?

Sanitation. Cleanliness IS godliness when you are playing yeast-god.

    Alternative to Avery Mailing Labels

I use the 2x4 avery labels but before sticking them on a bottle I slap them on a damp wash cloth that has a generous helping of dish soap in it. There's still enough stick to keep the label on through condensation and ice coolers but it makes removal with hot water a breeze.

Female 1/4" MFL to male 1/4" NPT

Ok, so something like this has to exist but apparently I can't google well enough to find it. I want a way to connect my threaded pin lock gas side QD (which I think is 1/4" male flare thread) to a brass Tee with female 1/4" NPT. What should I search for and can I find it on amazon? Please...

Add an acid to Palmer's water spreadsheet

Haha, probably right, but I can't figure out how to get that website to estimate additions for me, like Palmer's spreadsheet does. I've also tweeked a bunch of the "manual" fields in Palmers spreadsheet to calculate values based experience with previous additions. Not to mention I really like...

Add an acid to Palmer's water spreadsheet

I did some googling and came up empty, but is there a way to add an acid to Palmer's water spreadsheet? Specifically I want to add 2N H2SO4 as an option (~10% wt/wt). Thanks!

I LOVE waking up to hot strike water. Easy as 1-2-3.

Forgive me if I missed this, but has anyone had luck using that stick in a cooler? Do those metal foils keep the main element far enough away from everything so as to not melt the plastic?

    Low Frementation Temp for Ales

This advice comes from the perspective of a guy with a fridge plugged into a temp controller, but my go-to "house" yeast is WLP004. I try to pitch it under 64 and keep it there for the first 36 hours of fermentation. I bump it up a degree or two a day till I hit 70 at which point I cold crash...

    A keg conditioning question

I almost always prime a keg to carbonate and really like the results. I use BeerSmith to do the calculations and use plain table sugar. I undershoot a little bit since I find it easier to make up lacking carbonation once I hook up the gas as opposed to having to vent the keg a few times to...

Best Solution for mashing in the cold

In coming side track:off:, but have you had luck using 1728 that low before? I've used slurry from a local microbrewery that uses 1728 as their house ale yeast and not gotten any activity until I pushed my temps over 63-64. I felt these temps gave me a very strong yeast character I didn't...

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

I tried to google a bit, but I can't seem to find something like this in a 110-115v in that price range. Any links? Thanks!

Thin body on AG brews? Mash temp?

Double check that your thermometer is accurate in the 145 to 165 range if you can. If not, at least check that it reads boiling water at the right temp. I use distilled water and then adjust the boiling point for my house and air pressure with this website.

    Bottle conditioning in a growler?

I've done it a about 4 or 5 times with good results. I'm partial to english low-carbonated styles, so I think the most I've ever done is 2.1 volumes or so. I put the growler in a 5 gallon bucket with a snap down lid (walmart icing bucket) just in case.

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

I can think of several applications where I only need temp control in one direction. Cooling would be all I need for my keggerator build. Do you think you could run that model in heat mode also? Heating would be all I need for an electric HLT. I'm also thinking of building a control panel...

    Gravity 1.038 Repitch Yeast?

Not knowing what the user error is, I would try to shake up the yeast cake and bring the temp up ~5 °F (but keep it below 75). Consistency is key here. Don't let the temp make big swings. If that fails after a few days I'd try the 05. Keep in mind that you'll be asking the new yeast to start...

    BeerSmith 2: Mash Volumes

Is the difference equal to your mash tun dead volume? You can change that setting in the equipment profile and see if that effects the numbers BS2 is giving you.

    2 kegging options

Rack it, prime it, hit it with the injector (lightly, just a touch to set the o-ring). I've sealed plenty of kegs with the little 16g CO2 cartridges no problem. For your first time, have some soap-water or star-san on hand and spray down the lid to check for bubbles. Another suggestion is to...
