Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

    Thank you kind sir!!!

Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

Since 2.5 mL of oil did not have an "affect", I would suspect that the amount of oil that is drawn into our tube to float the hydrometer in is negligible and will not "affect" the hydrometer reading.

Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

Alright, so I just did the quick experiment. I added 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of vegatable oil to my hydrometer in water and I got a way off reading. I then added 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) and I got a reading accurate with water. I did not want to find the threshold because I was sick of washing oil out...

Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

I realized I used the wrong "affect". I could not edit this after I submitted the post. I am not dumb I swear, just dumbfounded.

Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

I know Wikipedia is not the most credible source to gather information, but since one of my professors in pharmacy school actually uses it to source some of his info in his lectures, I will give it a go: "A hydrometer or areometer is an instrument that measures the specific gravity (relative...

Would Hop Oils effect Hydrometer Readings?

I recently read that Sierra Nevada begins dry hopping when a batch is within 1 degree plato of target FG. This allows any oxygen that is within the hops to be pushed out by the co2 from the active yeast. My question is, would the addition of hop oils from dry hopping give you an inaccurate...

    Dry Hopping Final Gravity

My thoughts on this, is that hops contain oil. This oil is what we are extracting from the hops when dry hopping. Oil stays in a droplet form within water, as the two don't mix. Would the additional oil extracted from your hops cause your hydrometer to give you an incorrect FG? I have recently...

Using an Immersion Wort Chiller with a Recirculating Pump

I just tried for the first time, recirculating my water while cooling my wort. This saved a ton of water and got my wort down to 80 in about 25 minutes. I feel like if I used less water with the same amount of ice It would have chilled lower and faster. Check out my video I...

    Overactive Yeast Starter

I have a 2 liter flask making 2 liter starters, so yes there is limited head space. I think I am going to get some of that FermCap S and see if it makes a difference. Just one drop in the flask? Thanks for the recommendation!

    Storing Hops in Freezer Bags

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has had success with storing their hops in freezer ziploc bags? These are different from regular zipblocs, as they are made to store meat in the freezer. They avoid freezer burn and are microwave safe, saying it is "thicker plastic" on the box. I think...
