First all grain brewday has begun.

I had the same issue with my first AG batch. My major culprits were not starting with enough pre-boil volume, maybe boiling a little long, and being too concerned about getting trub in the primary. What was your preboil volume, and how long did you boil?

    New All Grain set up

In the Portland area, crushing your own grain only makes sense if you want to customize your crush. You won't save any money. Brew Brothers grain is so cheap, you can't get it any cheaper, and they'll crush it at no extra charge. I just bought their 'virtual' bag of 2 row for $30. Pay for the...

    valhalla's pride meadery

I like them! Somewhat OT, I lived in Valhalla, NY for a couple years. When I moved there, I constantly made jokes about living with the gods, etc, but nobody seemed to get it, so I stopped. I acquired both of my dogs while I was living there, and I named them Odin and (unfortunately accurately...

My wife just called my latest brew the best beer she'd ever had

I was going to use one, but I decided to try it without, and just tip at the end. It worked great, so I'll probably stick with it. I was able to get the hole pretty low in the pot, so I don't have to tip far. And yes, I'm SUPER happy with the decision to put in a valve. The new pot is 15...

My wife just called my latest brew the best beer she'd ever had

Part of it was upping the volume a little. The other part was going to be just to dump everything in and not worry about the trub. Let it settle out in the primary. I ended up doing a little better. I had been using a 7.5 gal pot, and just dumping the wort into my bottling bucket after I...

My wife just called my latest brew the best beer she'd ever had

She actually said it was a tie with this and Oskar Blues G'Knight, but I'll consider it a win. She's not a heavy drinker, but she samples a lot of different beers. This was my first AG beer, and it's actually pretty similar to G'Knight, but not a clone. It's also somewhat similar to Double...

Just tasted my First all grain batch And well.....

Wait a second. Are you the guy in Battle Ground selling a bunch of 22 oz bottles on craigslist? If so, you might get a call from me...

Specialty IPA: Black IPA Heavenly Scourge Black IIPA

I just brewed this on Saturday. It was my 2nd all grain, but everything seemed to go OK, and I ended up at 1.08. I used Carafa 3 with the husks (I didn't realize the recipe was for dehusked), and I added it at the same time as the rest of the grain. My LHBS was out of Amarillo, so I used Simcoe...

Stir plate making crazy big krausen?

OK, sounds like we've figured out the problem. I moved it to a 3l container, which is the biggest I have. Next question: Did I lose too much yeast? I'm making a pretty big beer, and the 2l starter was pretty much exactly what it called for. I definitely lost some yeast, but I have no idea...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'll be brewing a black IIPA, assuming my starter stops throwing all the yeast out of the top of the jar.

Meat beer is on the way

While you probably have the right idea above... you could try something like Rogue's Bacon Maple brown. Best of luck.

    I just want some ingredients!!

I'd give Brew Brothers a call. They're also in Oregon, but they seem to do a lot of shipping.

Stir plate making crazy big krausen?

I just built a stir plate, and I'm doing my first starter with it. It's a 2l starter in a 2l jar, so there's not a lot of headspace. However, I thought I'd be ok, since I've been reading that using a stir plate doesn't give big krausens. I started it last night, and I woke up to a bunch of...

    stainless steel ring

I followed Palmer's instructions pretty closely when I built mine. The braid can compress down pretty narrow when you pull on it, once the actual hose is removed, of course. You shouldn't have any trouble getting the 1/2" copper over it.

Neighbor wants to call fire marshall for brewing

Sounds to me like it's time to brew up 5 gallons for the fire dept... The fact that this guy blocks your driveway tells you the kind of person he is. If you can make sure nobody with power has an issue with you brewing, get his cars towed as often as you can. Sorry your neighbor is such a...

Wort Chiller recommendation for wider brew pot

The OP stated it is a 6 gal, but the dimensions listed make it 11.5 gal or so.
