Are you looking for cheap or inexpensive? I purchased an analog Johnson Controller at my LHBS for $63. If you are looking for something that will go to 30 degrees you might try setting the freezer to the warmest setting since you are actually looking for freezing temps.

You will want to keep the co2 connected the whole time. The air is what pushes the beer out of the keg.

I use mostly Northern Brewer kits so I would say any of the best seller extract kits would be a starting point. Maybe the American amber ale or the cream ale.

When I ordered during their Christmas sale the equipment arrived without a notification email. The parts are high quality and if I add a third keg they will be who I order from. I think they are just slammed during the sales and sometimes do not communicate as well as they would like.

Not to sound to critical but where do you put 48 bottles of beer and the empties that you save? A mini fridge would not take up that much more room than that. I put my Keezer in the garage.

I am still doing extract brewing but I would suggest the freezer for kegs and the fridge or standup freezer for lagers. It could be tough to move buckets or carbons into a chest freezer. If you are handy you might be able to build a fermentation chamber with multiple chambers.

Can you have beer in the secondary too long? I have been waiting on my chest freezer to arrive and my American Amber Ale has been in secondary for several weeks.

I would imagine that the fermentation would not produce enough pressure to worry about. You could always lift the lid every couple of days.
