    Dry your own yeast?

You prefer it when we just start up a million new threads to rehash the same topics? The OP did respond to this one, btw.

    Dry your own yeast?

I think it can be done. The commercial guys do it so I amend that to I know it can be done. A food dehydrator is really just a concept. By the time you modify the heating element controls to produce lower or no heat and build on a HEPA intake filter and modify the shelves to suitably contain...

Not sure on wether or not to brew 5lb dme and .5lb choc malt

Good question because it forces me to question my processes. I start all boils at 60 minutes regardless of when the first hops go in. It's how I learned to do this thing. As was pointed out it would get you more color but with this chocolate to volume ratio the DME isn't really going to...

Not sure on wether or not to brew 5lb dme and .5lb choc malt

You could lower the batch volume and call it a Black-IPA. I think you could use all the hops if you proportioned them for lower utilization and stacked them in a way you think you might like. I'd personally do something along the lines of this: 3gal Full Boil Steep in the Chocolate 60 minutes...

Tom Roeder's Dry Yeast vs Liquid Yeast Experiment

I should qualify my statements with "I have never used a Wyeast of any variety". Relative to what I was posting about; same beer at OG 1.068 attenuated to 1.022 with WLP 001 but 1.018 with US-05. The latter was too dry for my tastes and I preferred the lower attenuation of the WLP 001. Edit...

    Has brewing made you smarter?

To answer OP's title, "No". However, brewing has provided me a great deal of opportunities to utilize the intelligence I was naturally gifted with. So many things in life are pre-dumbed down with no benefit to be derived by analyzing it further. It's nice to have something that lets you foray...

Tom Roeder's Dry Yeast vs Liquid Yeast Experiment

My only issue with S-05 is that it gets such high attenuation. Otherwise I'd would probably use it exclusively outside of specialty styles. I've had no issues with undesirable flavors. For the same character and lower attenuation I typically look to WLP 001 or 007. I definitely appreciate the...

    Joe's IIPA

I've put 8lbs of DME and 1.2lbs of Crystal 40 in an American IPA (6 gal batch). At first tastings I had wished I'd used some sucrose for a drier finish but as it aged out I really appreciated the malt foundation and mouth feel that really worked with the hops (Nugget, Cascade, Centennial)...

Did you consider them the same before, and if so why?

    BIAB Experiment

Are you guys milling your grain down to flour because BIAB allows for it? I BIAB with roughly the same crush I would use in a MLT and cloudiness is minimal although efficiency is slightly lower.

What beer to pick up in the Carolinas?

Haha, thanks, the growler I got had a smudged label and the gravity high. I had read Neon Day thanks to smudge and remembered Neon Sun thanks to the gravity.

What beer to pick up in the Carolinas?

Olde Hickory Brewing makes some decent beers, too. I suggest Death By Hops but they have other good ones.

What beer to pick up in the Carolinas?

My bad, I attributed to Pisgah what belonged to Nantahalah. I should know better because I use their growlers for StarSan storage. I don't doubt Pisgah makes good beer I've just had nothing but watery peepee from them and stopped trying. The Neon Sun IPA and Pale Ale are heavenly creations from...

What beer to pick up in the Carolinas?

Big Boss does some decent beers. Aces and Ates is very good. They used to make one called the Big Operator I thought was awesome (raspberry stout). They used to bottle but the last time I was at the brewery they said they wouldn't be doing that anymore. I did keep those bottles because they were...

American IPA Bee Cave Brewery IPA

Couldn't the same effect be had steeping a Crystal Munich malt and likely get more fermentables out of it? Would it be worthwhile to BIAB partial mash 1# of munich malt grain then move on with the extract boil? just trying to figure out the best way to include the Munich element and stay as...

    Dumb beersmith question

The yeast input tables include attenuation factors. My guess is, Yooper has 75% plugged into all the yeasts she is using in Beersmith. I had to manually input US-05 and I input whatever factor was provided on the Safale datasheet. This should explain why changing yeasts changes the FG...

    Dumb beersmith question

In my experiences switching a recipe from WLP 001 to US-05 the FG numbers most certainly did slightly change. I switched back and forth a couple time to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I think you may be mistaken in your assertion. I'm using version 1.40 build 038.

    Twist off caps boo!!!!

Very distressing to learn Founders is moving to twist-offs. I don't buy low-grade beer regardless but I do let bottle selection guide my high-grade beer picks and Founders bottles comprise almost my entire stock of 12oz bottles. Is anyone aware of breweries that put twisties onto 22oz bombers...

Visiting South Georgia and Florida, Breweries?

BeerAdvocate's site has a feature called Beerfly which is pretty danged good for finding craft beer pretty much anywhere in the US with reviews to boot. All I know about South Georgia is Columbus, GA, which I think will be on your way to PCB. Boo's Liquor has the best selection and prices for...
