    White bubble and beige floaties

I'd guess the foam looking things are yeast rafts. Just yeast with CO2 stuck to them so they float to the top. The other stuff is probably just trub like that other guy said. A picture or two would certainly help out, too. There's a thread somewhere with pictures of actual infections, I...

All Grain has tasted weird 2 batches in a row

I think it is off. You're going to lose about a pint of your strike water per pound of grain (give or take), so when you get your first runnings you'll only get 6 gallons or so out. Then you can batch sparge with another 6 1/2 gallons and end up right about where you should be for your preboil...

Ah yes, I'm not getting conversion (I think?)

http://braukaiser.com/wiki/index.php?title=Understanding_Efficiency#Measuing_conversion_efficiency There's a chart there that is more effective than an iodine test. If the crush isn't fine enough and there is still starch that hasn't gotten into your mash water the iodine won't tell you it's...

    At home water testing

Thanks, Kai. Once again you've made brewing excellent beer easier for us all. You could turn that website into a book and sell millions of copies, I'm sure.

Is this enough info for me?

Cool. I had given up on trying to do anything to my water and just accept what I got straight out of the ground and run with it. I wouldn't mind being able to tinker with it just a bit even. I've got some pH test strips I'll check the pH with on my next brew. Hopefully tomorrow. I'll write...

Haze at the top of beer in the bottle

It most likely is. I like to look at a bottle with a light behind it every few days to see when the yeast drop out all the way. They're my little pets, and I like to check up on them!

    Efficiency Problems

Read this. http://braukaiser.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Brewhouse_Efficiency There's all kinds of pretty charts and graphs, and it's chock-full of information that will help you dial-in your efficiency. Also, if the fly-sparging is too much work, batch sparging works also...

Official 2009 Pay it Forward Thread!

I've got some hop rhizomes. I put some in a 5 gallon bucket to grow, but they didn't do all that well with the whole lack of enough dirt thing. I have no idea what kind they are, some guy gave them to me and said they were something that started with a 'C'. He didn't brew, but his wife loved...

yes. or more. I use at least 1.25 qts per pound, myself.

    floating white formations in secondary?

I can't really see anything in the picture, but I still think they're probably 'yeast rafts'. A bit of yeast gets some CO2 bubbles stuck to it, then they all float up to the top together and hang out for a while. They're lots of little bubbles in a circle or oval, right? Totally normal if...

21 hours and no Safale S-05 activity

Probably a bad seal on your bucket. If you want to open it a bit and look, you'll most likely see krausen. Or, you could wait for a bit to see if anything starts bubbling. I guess you could shine a flashlight at the side of the bucket and probably see the dark shadow from the krausen, too...

    New Gluten Allergy

Sorghum syrup and dried yeast are the best place to start. Sorghum has its own unique taste, so your first batch will give you a feel for what it's going to taste like. I kept mine nice and simple so I could easily figure out what the sorghum was contributing for flavors. I think I did 6# of...

    First all grain, lessons learned

The band saw blade probably was too thin. Seems like you solved the problem by drilling the holes, though. Did you have the slits on the top half of the manifold pipe, or the bottom half? If they're pointed up, they're more likely to get clogged up.

Help from dog owners and vets....

I don't know what to tell ya. All my females have been weird on their first heats, so it might just be that. The general rule of thumb is if they're eating and drinking it's usually not life threatening. If they're open and you feel like dropping some money, it wouldn't hurt to at least call...

Help from dog owners and vets....

As long as she's drank water and eaten today and kept both down and isn't showing any signs of pain on her stomach, I doubt there's anything severely wrong. Going to the vet tomorrow wouldn't be a bad idea, though. Keep an eye on the blood, though. If it gets really dark or it starts to smell...

Help from dog owners and vets....

Ask your wife if she ran five miles the first time she got her period. :cross: Which part of the neck is it that hurts? How about the stomach, does that hurt her too? Also, is lyme disease common where you live?

Help from dog owners and vets....

I thought that too, but I don't think a sore neck area would be indicative of that. You've been around dogs in heat before, I assume? Does she smell different compared to the other ones? Don't get your face down in there or anything, you'd probably be able to smell pyometra from across...

Help from dog owners and vets....

I've never seen a dog in heat with a sore neck. That's just weird, so I'm guessing the two are unrelated. Does she play fetch with sticks a lot? Might be a splinter somewhere or something. See if you can look in her mouth without getting bitten, you might see something out of the ordinary in...

    Suggestions for winter boots

Sorels all the way. I wear them ice fishing and never get cold feet. They're good for anything from -10 and windy all the way up to 45 and walking in three inches of 33 degree slush. If you're planning on walking somewhere, then going inside you'll love the removable liners for when they get...
