First time making starter, have a couple questions

Would it be beneficial for yeast to do 3.5 in two steps? Or just one step? I’ve read it’s better for yeast health to do in steps. Also my calculator showed 44% viability.

First time making starter, have a couple questions

So I may not have time for full 24 hour decant, but maybe I can just wait to oxygenate in conical and pitch when it’s ready. Could I not pitch the second step at full krausen just decant and pitch? What timeline would you recommend?

First time making starter, have a couple questions

Im thinking, when I get home from work tonight around 10 P -11PM, to do 2L step with one pack, and then tomorrow night crash and decant, then monday AM doing the 3-4L step and tuesday Am crash and then bring up to room temp to pitch tuesday night. Does this sound like a good plan? and should i...

First time making starter, have a couple questions

Hey guys First time getting into the yeast side of things. I used a couple calculators (Mr Malty) brewers friend etc, and Im getting different answers. I have 1 pack of WLP002 from Oct 20, 2018. So its kind of old, calculators are saying 45-50% viability. I have a bunch of quarts of...

    Working with sterile wort

The agar on plates is pure liquid when straight out of pressure cooker if I flipped over it would dump to the lid side

    Working with sterile wort

Plates have cooled, theyre full of condensation. I read that this shouldnt be an issue, but does it go away etc? Is there anyway to keep it from happening, i dont think that there is. Also I put them into the pressure cooker with the lid on the plates, was that a no no?

It’s about 30ML of wort in my tubes

    Working with sterile wort

Did the math, my tubed sterile wort is 1.025 gravity and my quarts are 1.032. So I should be fine to add slanted yeast colony with innoculation loop to the tubed sterile wort, then once thats good move up to a 2L?

    Working with sterile wort

I only have quart mason jars at the moment. I have extra sterile wort in the same tubes as I made my slants in. They’re about half full. I made them in the hopes of adding slanted yeast to the tubes of sterile wort, and from there going to a 2L. I made the sterile tubes of wort with 1L of...

    Working with sterile wort

That is what I am going to do, measure out smaller amounts, and use my quarts for liters, they are just about a liter. Make and use pints, for smaller amounts. Ive got about 12-15 slant tubes filled with sterile wort, for stepping up off my plates/slants, and then will go from that up to 1 L...

    Working with sterile wort

So I canned a bunch of quart mason jars with sterile wart. My question is, when bumping up a started from a slant or plate etc, is it safe to open one of the big quarts, and use and close, and open again? Won't that defeat the purpose of being sterilized after its exposed to t he open air, when...

Making sterile starters issue and question

The smell was like DME wort, but kind of funky if that makes sense. Could’ve been anything though, I PBWed and rinsed all the jars before as they were brand new. Did some more Searching and research and realize I’m probably ok! Excited to store and bank some yeasts and then get to growing...

Making sterile starters issue and question

so I followed maltose falcons recipe for mason jar pressure cooker sterilized wort. Added 3.2 Oz of DME, a hop pellet and filled with distilled water to the level where the ring meets, shook up, had to pressure cook to 15PSI for 15 minutes Question 1 - it took a really long time like an hour to...

Made slants and sterile starters, questions

I ordered fermcap for next round of slants I do, I want to bank 12-15 strains. I read somewhere that some people are using distilled water in place of mineral oil and it can be stored at room temp This way? Instead of the mineral oil, which usually supposedly lasts 12 months or so with no work...
