    Side-by-Side Freezer/Kegerator Controls

I have not done what you are asking, but I do use a side-by-side for serving from the freezer compartment and fermenting in the refrigeration compartment. I am sure that what you want can be done. I suggest removing the existing damper and replacing it with two fans. One fan located where the...

    Digital Scale Recommendation?

Let me apologize in advance for getting on my soap box. I often see posts on HBT that give me the impression that the difference between precision and accuracy isn't clearly understood. With instruments, precision often refers to how many digits to the right of the decimal point can be...

Yeast Pre-Oxygenation - Oxygenate your yeast, not your wort.

This is the first I have heard of preoxygenation. Bobby, thanks for your post and giving this technique broader exposure. It's an interesting technique and could be a handy tool to keep in ones brewing repertoire. I wonder, do we know that preoxygenation is really necessary? Does anyone know of...

    Nuts in the secondary?

I recall seeing a post discussing adding peanut butter powder, I think to the fermenter. This might be one option to consider to investigate further.

Can I use malted grains without drying?

You can also determine the moisture content of the grain/malt by weighting it before soaking/drying/smoking and comparing that weight to its current weight anywhere through the process.

    Outside temp controller

I would recommend the ITC-1000 or STC-1000 or similar. It is hard to beat the price and is a dual stage controller, so you can add heating if you need to in the future. Best is to reprogram the STC-1000 to become a STC-1000+ (also see https://github.com/matsstaff/stc1000p). It then holds 6...

California Free Kegs - Service Announcement

Hello: I thought that I would help spread the word, I have no affiliation, about 5 free kegs appearing in a Craig's List add in Fullerton, CA. I can't use corny kegs as I use sanke kegs. I hope this can benefit someone here. 5 Free Corny Kegs - Fullerton, CA

How to hit OG and FG targets for style?

If you find that your pre-boil gravity is low, you can add LME or DME to get to the targeted pre-boil gravity, Then with a consistent evaporation rate during the boil, you should be able to predict your OG fairly accurately. If you find that your pre-boil gravity is high, add more water to get...

Question about c02 in empty kegs

@CthulhuBrew33 - It sounds like you have ball lock or pin lock corney kegs. Your local brewery will fill those for you? Is it a closed transfer? If you have Sanke kegs, then I can understand a comercial brewery being willing to fill tour keg.

Polishing Fermenter Cone? Losses due to yeast dumping

Can we go back to the “polish the cone” question. No one has commented on that idea. Don’t they come with a highly polished cone, especially from Spike? I’m curious.

    120v to 240v Switch Contactor

Since you will be connecting terminals R2 and 2 together, you need to be sure the connection between R1 and R2 opens before the connection between terminals 1 and 2 close; i.e. break before make. Does this contactor do that?

    Smoked Vanilla Porter recipe suggestions

I have only tried vanilla beans and I was not pleased with the cost:flavor ratio they provided. That's why I recommend and will use extract at packaging when I want to add vanilla to a beer.

    Smoked Vanilla Porter recipe suggestions

My second to last brew was a smoked lactose porter; kind of similar to what you are thinking. Here is my input ... 1. This is a malt forward style, so why such a complex hop schedule. I'd suggest simplifying what you have above, maybe just a 60 minute addition to achieve your desired IBUs. I...

Large amount of sediment, hydrometer reading 1.000

Did you pasteurize and/or filter the juice to remove the pulp and pectin? There is a lot of pectin in raw apple juice and I assume the same for pear juice. I think that might be pectin mixed with pulp and yeast at the bottom of the jugs. I have found it best to let the raw cider settle in the...

    Wheat malt question

It’s recommended that you age, room temp is fine, any freshly toasted or roasted malt for a couple of weeks before brewing with it. At least that is what I have done and is what I have read.

Replacing Poppet on a Sanke Key

The video linked to by Lumpher shows how to remove the lock ring and spear. That black gasket that needs to be replaced is part of the valve assembly on the spear. The spear needs to be disassembled in order to replace it. I disassemble the spear by placing the spear upside down (valve/black...
