What got you into the hobby?

I always enjoyed a good beer. College in Milwaukee there were plenty of good brew pubs with their own beers on tap. Some world travel then exposed me to different beers. Living in India I would go through hell to get some bootleg imported BMC...their local beers really sucked. Best beer ever...

    Keg help - carbonation

Dispensing too fast maybe? Try throttling down the flow from the tap. That's why people are asking about your tubing length. I use a bunch of those acetal helical mixing rods (intended for mixing 2-part epoxies that dispense from a tube/syringe) in my keg's dip tube. I can vary the number of...

    My young weizenbock tastes hot

In my early days I’ve come across a few hot alcohol brews. Never could figure out what exactly was causing it. I wasn’t fermenting too warm, which was the obvious answer. I looked at my process and changed some things and haven’t had an issue since. Not sure if any one of these was the...

    Chugger pumps...impeller seizing?

I have a mill and a lathe and even made new bearings on the impeller. Pretty much did everything you could possibly do on the impeller at this point, enlarged the bore, reduced the bore, adjusted axial position, etc. Think I was chasing my tail with the impeller. It really seems as if the...

    Chugger pumps...impeller seizing?

Thought I had the common cavitation issues, but I think its something else. Pumping hot liquids you'll be going along fine and then hear a short squeal/buzz, motor changes pitch slightly and all flow stops. I shut the pump off and let the motor spool down. Just before the motor stops it...

    Dry yeast starter

My thoughts were to make starter only to increase cell counts because I'd be using a partial packet of dry yeast. That way I figure I'd be able to stretch a packet of yeast on the front end...without having to harvest/wash yeast from the bottom of my carboy.

    Dry yeast starter

I use a lot of dry yeast. Tried yeast harvesting...it was a pain. Had a thought to stretch my yeast dollars by making a dry yeast starter. Figured I could make a starter with half a packet of dry yeast For one batch. That way I could get two batches out of one packet. Is this...

    Overfill protection

I did this too with the same float switch (McMaster-Carr?) My fill valve is manual so I ran this switch to an alarm on the PLC to give me advanced warning before water starts pouring over the top of my HLT. Yes, before I added the switch I actually did this and drenched my pump motors. Made a...

    Boil settings?

Yes, I'm using SSR's, but the relays on the controllers themselves (automation direct SL4848RR) is what concerns me. Says the relays are good for 100,000 cycles. Suppose at 2sec periods for 1hr boils you'd get 55 batches out of one. Guess nothing lasts forever.

    Boil settings?

Did my first pilot run on my brew stand this weekend. This is the first time brewing with heater elements and think I could use some pointers. I have the output period on my temp controller set to 10 sec (range is 0.5-99 seconds). I thought this would be a compromise for life of the relays...

    Leaf blower for exhaust fan

I found an under the counter range hood on sale instead. 350cfm, 3 speeds. Was looking to move at least 300cfm as my brew stand is in my basement utility room with no windows.

    Show us your panel

Its not quite finished but almost there. Just got the programming done and debugged and need to wire in the heat elements and pumps... Everything is run through the PLC. Recipes can be set up and run automatically up until the boil. This is a HERMS and can be programmed to cycle through...

    Leaf blower for exhaust fan

Has anyone attempted or considered using a plug in leaf blower for an exhaust fan? Saw at the Home Depot I can get a 390 cfm leaf blower with speed control for $50. Downside I guess would be louder than average blowers due to their compact size and high rpm motors. Also not sure how well...

    Oh the horror!

Went to pull my carboy out of my temp controlled mini fridge and found the fabric "brew hauler" strap covered in mold. The good news is the beer appears fine. No mold growing in the fridge that I can see. Sprayed the interior down with star san and ran the brew hauler strap through the...

Best RO system for the money?

http://www.softenerparts.com/Microline_RO_Filters_s/6.htm The storage tanks are generally about 2 gallons. If you need more water at a time you can always hook up multiple tanks. I have 3 tanks hooked up at the moment.

    Edgestar KC3000 Twin

I just got one of these a month ago as well. Works fine. Actually gets really cold. I have koolaid on one tap for the kids and ended up freezing it. You mentioned that you have two 5-gallon and one 2.5 gallon kegs. I've found the short 2.5 gallon keg will fit up on the bump in the back with...

Why bring the water to boil before adding extract

Same here. My water is usually about 150F from steeping the grains. While removing the grains and dealing with that I crank the burner full on. By the time I'm back to my boil kettle I'm at 180F. Shut burner off and add LME.

Is kegging always a battle against leaks?

I turned off the 2 gas lines at the reg and the valve on the co2 tank. Watching the overall pressure gauge for about 30-min I saw it was losing pressure. Figure a leak must be at the manifold. Pulled hoses off manifold and submerged the pressurized tank and manifold in the sink...no leaks...

    fly/batch sparging

Help me clear something up. I'm a seasoned extract brewer looking to leap to all-grain. I see the terms fly and batch sparging thrown around a lot, but never found any clear definitions. This is what I'm assuming, please correct if wrong. Fly sparging: While draining your mash, you slowly...
