Bottle shelf life ( or torture of noob)

You can send them to me. :) Honestly, they may be great, they may be horrible.

    Started my first homebrew today

Yesterday was brew-day and after putting in the primary the only excitement I experienced around fermentation was checking to discover that it was blowing through my airlock and running onto the floor.. ~18 hours after pitching. a bucket and a big hose remedied that though. Like so many things...

    First batch success

Congrats, and oh what a feeling the first sit down with your own hand crafted brew! Save one or two for the future so you can compare the difference between short and long bottle age. cheers!

    hydrometer reading

regarding whether yeast is pitched or not, I doubt it making a noticeable different if any. In my experience: - run of the mill hydrometers seem inaccurate - if you put water on top of wort, the gravity reading will be off despite conventional (swirl it around) method of aeration, therefore...

Can I use maltodextrin in my mash to increase alcohol content

I knew I grabbed the wrong thing. Thanks!

    First brew done!

Extract w/specialty grain SNPA Clone (NB Sierra Madre) OG 1.054 FG 1.010 Primary fermentation, 1 wk. Bottle conditioned, 1 wk. The beer hit FG in 4 days, and i bottled on day 7. Have happily drank three today (day 14.) The fermentation was a little higher, primary fermentation shorter, and...

    Clone?

The one I just did was extract with extras, but its spot on as far as I could tell pre-carbonation. (SNPA)

So, what's the big deal with yeast starters?

Seems like the appropriate amount of yeast would be dependent on the original gravity and the associated profile of the wort.

So, what's the big deal with yeast starters?

I dunno man, a lot of the info I've been finding has no science behind it. (or at least references) I'm the type that likes to know the whys behind doing things, not just that someone says thats how its supposed to be done, so do it. In my opinion, do it however you want, and if you're happy...

    Bottling observation

So against conventional wisdom I bottled my brew as I personally feel that it is fine after a week fermenting. I guess I will find out for sure in a couple weeks. Bottling is somewhat of a hassle, and a tip for any newbies reading this, put your carboy higher than your bottling bucket when...

So a floating thermometer is a good thing (swamp cooler)

I tried the swamp cooler advice, which honestly did not make a whole lot of sense to be because of how evaporative coolers work, I couldn't see it actually cooling anything but the wet towel and maybe the carboy. I was correct. If you want to chill it you'll need refrigeration or colder...

    Bottling quickly question

thats a good point.. its still fairly cloudy, and I do have a secondary I can rack into for the purpose of freeing up my primary. Perhaps the thing to do is go buy a six pack of the real deal to tide me over, and be patient. I dont mind sediment in the bottles, but the thought of an inch or so...

    Bottling quickly question

Oh sorry, NB Sierra Madre (SNPA clone) I already love the taste, so I don't see any reason to wait.. I mean, I know it will be better, but I'm all antsy in my pantsy to get it bottled and brew another batch. (Which I should be able to wait for while drinking this one)

    Bottling quickly question

Really, its more along the lines of deviating away from the general consensus here which is to let it sit in the primary for 3 weeks before bottling. I noticed my first batch *edit (NB Sierra Madre (SNPA Clone)) stopped fermenting after 4 days, so I took a gravity reading and it was at the...

Are these the essentials to begin brewing beer?

Looks good, I'd opt for an Aluminum or Ceramic coated kettle though and save myself $50. There is a good thread around here regarding non SS kettles, and they are perfectly fine. Thats just my 2 cents.

    Clogged strainer!

I'd imagine any straining device would get clogged so you really have two options 1) go slower and periodically clean the strainer 2) Throw it all in the fermenter and dont worry about it.
