How do other actual brewers feel about 'Beer Flights'?

I like beer flights, I can't deny. The variety that satisfies. When a tray comes in, with ales galore and different flavors I explore I get excited. I want to taste them all. 'Cause those brews have got me in thrall. In the glasses they're pouring, I'm hooked and can't stop exploring. Oh yeah, I...

How long is your brew day?

We run all grain about 3.5 hours on a typical 5-gallon batch: start the gas to heat the strike water and set up the rest while it's heating up. 30 minute mash in a bag, then pull the bag out, let it drip a bit, light the gas again to get up to a boil while we sparge in a ZapPap, pour in the...

Anyone Ferment in a Mini Keg?

This sounds like you can rack 5 liters into it after fermentation. Mini Keg with Tap

White Labs PurePitch Next Generation Cell Count v. Underpitch

Yes, that's close to what White Labs recommended; only pitch a portion of the pack vial and save the rest for later: "I believe that the new packaging will actually help you know more about what your pitch rate really is. ... For reference, the previous classic HB packs were 35mL and would be...

White Labs PurePitch Next Generation Cell Count v. Underpitch

I guess I should have just brewed 10 gal instead of 5 and split the package between both fermenters. 🤷‍♂️

    Hydrometer test jar hack?

Thanks for posting the link. I can spare $8 once, and 8-12 oz per batch (4oz on brew day, 4 oz on testing, and 4 oz on bottling day).

White Labs PurePitch Next Generation Cell Count v. Underpitch

Like many homebrewers, I've been chasing the dragon of a prior fantastic brew. This one is a very banana-forward hefeweizen resulting from underpitched WLP 300 and a warm fermentation. In addition to sticker shock from $17 yeast, the new WLP300 PurePitch boasts a much higher cell count than...

Anyone else ever try bottling a special yeast/trub sample?

I do exactly this with two minor changes: First, I add 2, 3, and sometimes 4, bottles of bottled water. After swirling the bucket to dilute the trub, it pours nicely from the spigot. Second, I use Bell canning jars from Goodwill rather than beer bottles. I seal them with plastic lids from...

    Cap Color Coding System

Anyone else have a color coding system to avoid the need for labels and sharpies? We use the following because we don't brew many variations of each style. Using both shorties and longnecks gives two styles per cap color.

Trying to create a Heath Bar Toffee Porter. Help with recipe inside please :)

Brewed this in November and entered it in my first competition with the local brew club. Followed Yooper's tweaks (except for the black malt), left out the Heath Bars, omitted the lactose due to intolerance, but tried our best to caramelize 2qts of wort on the stove. 8# Pale Malt 2-row 2.5#...
