Caribou Slobber Extract: Add water before or after boil?

I had actually saw you rave about this one in a previous thread and that's the reason I gave this one a shot with extract. I had only brewed all grain before this. I'll give the honey a try. Have you brewed with RO water?

Caribou Slobber Extract: Add water before or after boil?

Update: I ended up starting the boil with 5.75 gallons of RO water and racked 5 gallons into primary and hit the OG 1052 exactly. Because NB instructions say 1-2 weeks primary and 2-4 weeks secondary along with many people on HBT saying it has a harsh bitterness, I decided to do a secondary. I...

Caribou Slobber Extract: Add water before or after boil?

I am going to try my first extract with specialty grains. The recipe for 5 gal says to boil 2.5 gals. After boil and chilling it says to add 2 gals cold fresh water to fermenter before adding cooled wort and then top to 5 gals. Is there a reason for this? Are they just putting these...

    Krausen in air lock

1/2" minimum. I used a 3/8" and didn't quite do the job. 1/2" ID fits the nipple on a 3 piece air lock.

    Recirculating mash question...

I watched that video with Will Wheaton as well, assuming that's the one.. Probably my favorite brew video yet. I designed my system exactly like that and working great. You need a ball valve on the discharge side of pump, I have that same sparge arm and works awesome, worth $60. Limit the flow...

    Good Hydrometer?

I've brewed 3 batches with the Hurcelometer. Yes, it's plastic, you can drop it but there is a design flaw in my opinion. The top cap comes off easily. Water is now in the beads on the bottom and its way off the mark.

Hop Bags for Boil, Clogging with Break Material

I just used muslin bags for the first time and used multiple. I did have a little problem when I turned the pump up to recirculate but I just turned the output down and unclogged the bag from the bulkhead and didn't happen again. I even cut them in half. 2oz per bag seemed like the max I will...

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

Thank you. I do make a 1L starter using a stir plate. How do you harvest yeast slurry? I suppose I can research that myself.

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

Good thinking. It's way off. .986. 12 points off.

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

I'm not sure how that moisture could have gotten in there with that green layer that looks like a seal but that moisture was definitely not in there before. I'm just going to get a fully sealed glass one.

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

I had the cooler set to 60 for the first 24 hours then up to 64 since. Should I be taking a sample and setting temp based on liquid temp?

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

Yea, I posted about it on Friday night and got some good help with that. I'm going to whirlpool better next time. Do you get a ton of krausen in 2 days? I'm planning to head to the HBS to get one. Just threw the plastic one out today. Junk.

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

Does a longer starter hurt it? Ill start doing starters the day before then.

    Is This a Stalled Fermentation?

FYI, I'm new to brewing, this is my 3rd brew. The first pic is right after racking to primary. Here is my all grain Kama Citra IPA 4 days after pitching the yeast. I used Mangrove Jacks M44 in a 3 day starter. It started out vigorously fermenting 12 hours after pitching the yeast at 4pm Fri...
