    Lager Yeast Fermentation

Gavin, So when you say you pitched at 48....Are you chilling it to that temp with a plate/chiller or are you getting it that cold by letting it sit in the cold ferm for a bit before pitching? I tried like hell to get mine down that far with a pre-chiller, and a 70' copper coil. I am talking...

    Lager Yeast Fermentation

Oh good. I just did not expect to see what I did when I opened that lid after 12 hours. I was worried that I may have way over pitched. But calculated my cells count and did things by the book. I have found that sometimes "by the book" is not always the best outcome.

    Lager Yeast Fermentation

I recently brewed my first lager. It is a Winter Type Lager and came in at about 1.062 OG. Everything in the brew session went to plan. Oxygenated the wort for 90 seconds with pure 02. Cooled wort to 54-56. Placed it in the ferm at around 52 and pitched my 3.5 liter starter (2 vials WLP830)...

    Herms Basics and Re Circulation

Do hulls have any effect on the flavor or gravity of the wort/beer? I have seen this suggestion in other threads. Also, I am think about increasing the water/grain ratio just a bit. I was running at about 1.25. I may ramp that up to 1.5 on the next batch. Hell, l have the room in the tun...I...

    HERMS Water to Grist Ratio

I used Stainless Brewing to purchase my 1/2" - 50 ft coil and all I can say is wow. Way worth every penny. I think it was around 97 dollars with the 2-90 degree bends. Install was a snap. It takes about 10 gallon on my keggle to cover it but there is still plenty of room for sparge water...

    Herms Basics and Re Circulation

Forgot to add that I have just a standard stainless steel false bottom. Not sue if that is clear or not? It seems to work really well and never seemed to have a problem with it batch sparging over the past few years.

    Herms Basics and Re Circulation

I have a false bottom in the mash tun. I ran my first batch at about 85% mash efficiency but I did run into a few issues with getting the re circulation rate to be correct. It seemed that I had a bit too much water on the grain bed and compressed things down a bit. I didn't get a stuck...

    Herms Basics and Re Circulation

Adam, Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. I appreciate your advice and willingness to share your experiences. I will for sure consider adjusting the time on the re circulation of the initial mash step. I will also monitor my Mash Ph and SG as I get close to final boil volume...

    Herms Basics and Re Circulation

I recently upgraded my brew system with a HLT containing a herms coil and pump. I have a standard 10 gallon water cooler with a false bottom. My intention with the upgrade is to increase my overall brewhouse efficiency and gain a more consistent beer. With that, here are my questions...
