    Clumpy/curdled starter

Hi All, Many thanks for confirming my lovely yeast is not some mutant form of cottage cheese about to devour my hard won wort and turn it into undrinkable goo. My partner (ever the practical one) looked up the yeast and found some familiar photos that made us feel better. Cheers Rob

    Clumpy/curdled starter

Hi, I had a really out if date White Labs English Ale WLP002 (BBD Jun 14 2010), but thought I'd give it a go. I started it at 2100 on Thurs (10th Nov) into a 3 pint starter at 1.040 (way too large I should have slanted it or made mini starter) and not a lot happened, which wasn't too...

Primary Fermenting in a Corny Keg

Hello, Great thread! I've been fermenting in Cornies ever since I dropped a carboy and watched a lovely looking porter flow down the drain in our wet room (luckily it wasn't in the kitchen, or I might not be here to post...), and think they're great! No problems with attenuation...

Can yeast be stored under glycerin instead of mineral oil?

Thanks Randar, Hmm, I think mineral oil is a big no no in Sweden, and I wouldn't have a clue how to work out the right concentration of glycerin to keep the yeast going. Now, please feel free to call me stupid, but what about olive oil?? There seems to be some research done on using it...

Crazy baby sterilizer for yeast idea?

Good point, thanks. The pressure cooker I've ordered has three pressure settings, which seems good: 1) atmospheric, 2) 8 psi & 3) 15 psi. I think I'll go with the microwave "sterilizer" for baby bottles and pressure cooker for yeast and the odd bit of cooking. Rob

Can yeast be stored under glycerin instead of mineral oil?

I'm thinking about giving it a go to see. Will make up normal slants and then one each with glycerine and trying it in about a year or eighteen months and post the findings, this shouldn't be too difficult as I don't get to brew nearly as much as I'd like. Rob

Crazy baby sterilizer for yeast idea?

Thanks Theredben, The one I have my eye on seems to be OK for 15 psi. I live in Sweden so can get free shipping from UK Amazon, but alas there is no ebay... and my Swedish is not existent! I'm sure we can think of other uses for it, like sterilising the baby stuff ;). I'm also sure my...

Crazy baby sterilizer for yeast idea?

Thanks for confirming my suspicions... I just ran a little experiment, as I noticed there are some "steam vents" in the lid, so thought these could be sized to create a pressure with the steam flow generated (a bit like a pressure cooker or an orifice plate creating a back pressure) and...

Crazy baby sterilizer for yeast idea?

Hello, I am looking at culturing some yeast from some bottled beer and don't have a pressure cooker (this is easily rectified), but have a baby microwave sterilizer... Is it a totally crazy idea to use a baby microwave sterilizer for sterilizing perti dishes and slants? It doesn't seem to...

Can yeast be stored under glycerin instead of mineral oil?

Hello, I live in Sweden, so have taken to brewing beer as it's SO expensive here! I have just finished reading Chris White & Jamil Zainasheffs great book on yeast, and want to culture up some yeast from some beers smuggled in from the UK. My freezer's not suitable, or big enough for...
