You could also try $ sudo pip install pyserial --upgrade Worked for me with a different problem, but it can't hurt

maybe if I had run the echo -ne 'E\n' > /dev/ttyACM0 command after I did sudo pip install pyserial --upgrade i could have used the web interface to flash the hex but i did it the other way around so the world may never know
