I believe what the people who told me thought is that typically a darker ale would have a higher starting gravity which ties into what smmcdermott said. Of course this is not always true.
Quick question about the 213 rule. Is there any harm in moving to secondary earlier?
I have only brewed 4.5 beers so far (one is in the secondary fermenter) but I had some of the same questions early on.
From what I have been told a couple drops of iodophor really shouldn't add much flavor based on the ppm of the solution and then being diluted more by the beer. However it...
VTBrewer - Thanks for the validation. My last beer was way too carbonated.
blackwaterbrewer - Good to know. I need to get a fridge for my beer so I can mess with the temperatures and brew lagers.
Thanks everyone for all the advice. I really appreciate it as this is only my second brew and the first took almost 68 hours to start visible fermentation.
At this point the temperature has dropped to about 73 degrees and will likely drop another 1-2 degrees. The yeast looks to be...
VTBrewer - No it does not. Currently I have the caning rod stuck into the rubber cork that the airlock would normally fit into. Its a good tight fit and is going into a bucket full of water.
SPLASTiK - Not sure. The liquid crystal thermometer on the side of the glass carboy currently says 77...
Just started a weizen beer last night and the fermentation is going insane. It has not even been 24 hours but I had to switch from a fermentation bubble lock to a blow off tube using my caning rod into an ale pale. So far there has been a lot of blow off and a ton of krausen (sp).
I think...
My Red Ale finally started showing some bubbling in the fermentation lock last night. It took about 67.5 hours before I got any signs other than the odd smell at about 45 hours. Any word on how often the lock should bubble for a good rate of fermentation? Mine is going about once every 3...
So I posted earlier about how I did not think my beer had started fermenting. Tonight after I took the dog on a walk I noticed an odd smell. Seems to be coming from my fermenter. Still no bubbles in the air lock but I am really starting to think that the seals on the bucket are not great...
Started my first batch of beer on Sunday evening. Its a Brewer's Best Red Ale. Pitched the yeast around 1:00 AM Monday morning and still had no signs of fermentation this morning =(. Its in an Ale Pale so I cannot see whats happening. I know, I know... "Relax. Don't Worry. Have a home-brew."...
