Hi all -
Recently moved to a new house (well, last summer) and ready to start brewing again. Previously an extract brewer with a couple dozen successful brews under my belt, but now the new house has a large garage, plus a shed, plus a large driveway. Might be time to go BIAB...
To that end...
Not a restaurant, but to buy some sixers go to the Piggly Wiggly at Shelter Cove.
Seriously.
The wife and I just got back last week from our place in Harbour Pointe. The selection at the Piggly Wiggly was amazing - lots of Victory brews, lots of local stuff (Palmetto, etc.), even some...
Update:
Took a gravity reading today, 14 days after brewing. Krausen had fallen to less than 1/8", bubbles in the airlock once every 45 seconds or so.
FG = 1.012 at 65 degrees. Still maybe .001 too high, but I decided to go ahead and transfer to secondary. Probably loose that last...
Former Army officer (1999 - 2004) here.
ROTC scholarship out of high school. I went to a private university that now costs over $144,000 for a four year degree for just under $10,000.
Yes. In the Army, based upon your academic standing, scores in various ROTC evaluations, an...
Whoops. I typed the recipe up wrong. The first four pounds of DME are extra light DME, not wheat. Only the final pound (hence, 20% total) was wheat DME.
I brewed the following Kolsch recipe on Monday, May 19th:
5 lbs. Wheat DME
1 oz. Perle (8.2% AA) pellets
2 oz. Spalt (2.6% AA) pellets
Wyeast 2565 Kolsch packet
Boil 2 gallons of water, add first 4 lbs. wheat DME and 1 oz Perle. Boil for 45 minutes.
Add 1 oz. Spalt (flavor), boil...
I have the second iteration of my pale ale in the primary, ready to go into the secondary tomorrow or the next day. I dry hop for four days with one ounce of Cascade, but I also bought some Knox gelatin to start using in my paler beers that I would like to see clearer.
My question is this...

My wife and friends can't get enough of this stuff! Though I've moved to kegging, I find bottling works better with apfelwein. Easier to transport to parties or give away to friends.
The kegging is going well. I have fixed all leaks in my system, put my Irish stout on the gas with the "set it and forget it" method, and got 10' of 3/16" beer line, and have balanced my system at about 42 degrees, at 12 psi. Lovely pours!
One problem - the first pint of the day has a...
Forgot to mention - you could try Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville. Part of a local chain of restaurants, they have five of their beers on tap at a given time. Not too bad, and really good food, too.
+1 on the Old Dominion brewpub.
There's a Dogfish Head Alehouse in Falls Church, VA about 45 minutes east of Ashburn, near my place. Good food and great beer.
I love Victory stuff, especially their Prima Pils and Golden Monkey. Alas, their restaurant is going to be partially closed while I'm there (sandwiches only), and will close altogether for renovations, to reopen next year.
Oh, I'll probably hit Monk's. I wanted to stick to places close to where I'd be staying, but there are too many good places downtown to miss. Your list looks good, and I also want to check out Manayunk.
