I'm drinking a Columbus/Maris otter smash right now that I'm really pleased with. I'd like to clean out some other bulk leaf hops from last year in a similar fashion but am unsure how it would turn out. My last grain bill for a five gallon batch was ten pounds of MO. I hopped by throwing in an...
Take gravity readings so you know it is finished. Doing it by sight can lead to problems.
If you're in no rush leave it in secondary for at least a few more weeks. When it comes to carbing it comes down to personal preference and equipment. If you have space, I would skip the priming sugar...
I would argue that the mass market brewers are extremely skilled at making that light lager style. Unless you like the challenge, I would agree that it would save money and time to just buy. Why not make a wheat, kolsch, or blond that opens them up to a new style?
My buddy and I are looking to do some 10 gallon brew days. We have keggles for HLT and brew pot, and we each have our own 10 gallon round converted coolers that we use to mash when we are brewing solo. We typically do single step batch sparges.
For a combo brew day are there advantages to using...
Last post was referencing haufbrauhaus. Good food and beer but not exactly local. Morlein's lager house has opened to great reviews as well. If your willing to explore some near by neighborhoods Hyde Park square has cock 'n bull and teller's. Mariemont has Dilly Deli and Northside has the Comet...
Water temps this time of year don't help either. My CFC got temps down easier in colder months. Sometimes I have to let wort sit a few hours after running it through before pitching to get temps down further.
Length & diameter are the other two variables for sure.
I'm a noob all grainer who has seen the same. Beer came out fine but not sure what it was. I even thought of posting the same. Interested in hearing an answer as well.
General observation from personal experience and mistakes: stop worrying so much about brew day and worry more about the weeks of fermentation that follow. Personally I spent my first few years of brewing wasting so much energy and focus on the process of brew day. Once the boil was finished I...
I'm not running a pump, but my 20 ft 3/8 tubing CFC has been working fine with only gravity. It's great you've solved your problem - just wanted to share a positive result without a pump and no clogging.
